CHANDIGARH, June 24: Shortage of admission forms at the university inquiry counter has marred the commencement of admission session at the Punjab University.
The shortage of forms has become a recurrent feature at the university and candidates wishing to seek admission have been facing this problem for the past three days.
The student unions, who have set up guidance camps near the university gymnasium hall, allege that forms get exhausted by 11.00 am every morning. A person then rushes to procure more forms which then arrive an hour later.
This problem is particularly acute in case of admission forms of B.Ed. The official spokesman of the university, Sanjiv Tewari, when contacted said steps would be initiated immediately, and it would be ensured that the situation normalises from tomorrow. He added that directions were being given to ensure that no short supply of admission forms takes place.
In view of the shortage, one student union has even bought a large number of forms and are seen selling the admission forms from the tent which they have pitched right across the university counter.
Apart from the shortage of forms, the new arrangement also leaves much to be desired. Recently, the university had decided to shift the inquiry counter from the main administrative block to the university gymnasium. The university employees are seen sitting in front of the gymnasium entrance without even pedestal fans.
PU results on time?
While university officials state that this year they have been able to advance the date of declaration of results, questions are being raised whether all the results will be declared before the last date for submission of admission forms.
The university has prescribed July 2 as the last date for submission of admission forms, and till date only the B.Com results have been declared. While admission forms are being sold at a hurried pace, many students have already begun submitting the forms without attaching their result.
Students say that even if the results are declared before the last date, they doubt whether they would be able to procure the marks card, get its photocopies attested, and submit them to the institute or department where they are seeking admission.
Viva-voce delayed
Meanwhile, some students of the Hindi Department are facing problems with regards to the holding of viva-voce. A few students had submitted their Ph.D. thesis and their viva was slated to be held early this month.
However due to some reasons, the viva was postponed. They are awaiting fresh dates and it seems it will be delayed further since the university is currently observing holidays, and subsequently they will be busy with the admissions.
On the other hand, Ph.D. viva of students of the Sanskrit Department are being held during these days. The student organisation, Cultural Mafia, has criticised the delay in holding of the viva. The president of the organisation, Uma Kant Mehta has in a press statement requested the university authorities to hold the viva-voce soon.
