Police said more men were deployed in the region where security forces were placed on red alert for a possible strike by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam LTTE. 8220;We fear that the Tigers will try a spectacular attack now that the monitors are not here,8221; a local military official said. 8220;We are on maximum alert.8221;
The Scandinavian truce monitors had pulled out of the area after yesterday8217;s mine blast triggered by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels against a Navy bus which wounded 12 sailors.
The operations were suspended since security situation there was 8220;not acceptable,8221; Helen Olafsdottir, spokeswoman of the Norwegian-led Sri Lanka monitoring mission said. But the island8217;s volatile North-East was relatively peaceful today after a string of bomb attacks yesterday.
A total of at least 136 people, including 79 security personnel have died in the latest round of violence which started in December.
Meanwhile, the five Nordic countries which contribute staff to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission SLMM today condemned Saturday8217;s bombing against one of their offices in Batticaloa, a district adjoining Trincomalee.
