MUMBAI, April 5: Tatas and Air-India have entered the final of the first Karnataka Veterans Football tournament being held at the Karnataka ground, Cross Maidan here today.

Tatas overcame Mahindras 1-0 while Air-India prevailed 4-2 via the tie-breaker over BPT in the other semi-final.

Tatas’ free-kick expert, John Alphonso curled in a flag kick which beat the Mahindras defence and landed on the feet of Kalyan Sarkar whose powerful left-foot shot beat Andrew Pereira in the Mahindras goal. Mahindras created a glorious opportunity for themselves when Pratap Gaikwad chipped the ball to Lindolf Naronha. naronha’s header beat Tatas goalkeeper bandya Kakde but the goalscorer was pulled up for off-side.

The Air-India and BPT match remained goalless at fulltime and the tie-breaker was resorted to.

For Air-India, Raghunath Pillai, Sanatan D’Souza, Bimal Ghosh and Sanjit Palit scored while Francis Fernandes and Newton Laitao were successful for BPT.

The final will be played on Tuesday.
