EVER since I met Mumtaz, I8217;ve been looking at my face with great curiosity. And invariably, her words ring in my ears, 8216;8216;Chehra aaina hai dil ka. If your heart is pure then you look good too.8217;8217;
Judging her by her own yardstick, the lady clearly has a heart of gold. Never mind that a few years ago, she lost all her hair due to chemotherapy for the breast cancer that she was suffering from, or that she put on weight due to a thyroid problem. The lady still glows with an inner light and energy. She may have acted in 75 films, chucked her career to get married more than 30 years ago, yet even now, at 56, she is still loved and sought after in India.
8216;8216;I have to come here after every few months,8217;8217; says Mumtaz. 8216;8216;This is still my home, this is where I belong. All my surgeries have been done here.8217;8217; the silver screen star of Tere Mere Sapne spends most of her time in her sprawling homes in London, Uganda or Kenya, but makes sure she lives a disciplined life. 8216;8216;I sleep early and wake up early,8217;8217; she points out. 8216;8216;I eat simply, do not smoke and drink only occasionally.8217;8217;
Mumtaz used to swim, cycle and ride regularly but has now narrowed down her fitness routine to walking on the treadmill every morning and yoga after that. Stomach crunches and sit-ups are equally important. 8216;8216;I have to cut down on all fatty foods and try and lose the weight that I have put on,8217;8217; Mumtaz says, wistfully pointing out that she loves desserts.
8216;8216;For me,8217;8217; twinkles the Bindiya Chamkegi sensation, 8216;8216;good health is all about feeling good. And I am a happy person, I enjoy jokes and I like people who laugh.8217;8217;
I am curious to know what advice she gives her two grown-up daughters about skin care. 8216;8216;I tell them to use the best products in the market, never skimp. I myself use Creacute;me de la Mer, made by a doctor.8217;8217;
What else? 8216;8216;I always tell them to have confidence in themselves and faith in God,8217;8217; Mumtaz says emphatically. 8216;8216;When I discovered that I had breast cancer and had to go through painful chemotherapy for months, it was this confidence and faith that saved me, and also the love and support from my family and my sister Malka,8217;8217; she says.
8216;8216;Now I am absolutely fine and I can tell you that health is all in the mind too. One must not be jealous or have bad thoughts about others.8217;8217;
Which brings us back to where we started8212;to that warm, caring heart behind that glowing face.
