MUMBAI, January 6: The upmarket and congested Carter Road in Bandra west will soon sport a new look. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC has announced a beautification programme under which this part of the Queen of Suburbs will be converted into a boulevard.

The 1.5 km stretch along Carter Road on the west side beginning from Otter8217;s Club upto Khar Danda will be beautified at a total cost of Rs 2.85 crore. To cater to the crowd which steps out for a brisk walk during the early morning hours, the road will have a special 16 feet wide jogging track running along the reworked road. The jogging track will be prepared with improved earth base and heavy duty tiles and greenery. The space beyond the road and jogging track is also proposed to be beautified, landscaped and illuminated at night.

The existing 40-45 feet development road will be widened to 60 feet. A storm water drain, cement chairs and pre-fabricated flower beds also include in the beautification exercises. According to civic officials,the contract has been awarded to M/s Prime Engineers who are scheduled to complete the work in eight months excluding monsoon. Minister of State for Cultural Affairs, Pramod Navalkar has performed the bhoomipooja ceremony and announced a contribution of Rs 5 lakh from the District Project Development Committee fund and an additional Rs 10 lakh from the MLA fund for the project. The suburban district collector has already issued the green signal for theprogramme.
