Roger Federer suffered his worst defeat in almost three years when he was routed by American Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-2 in the Pacific Life Open semi-finals on Saturday.
By the same score, Novak Djokovic powered past defending champion Rafael Nadal.
Federer, the Swiss star who has seemed almost invincible for most of the past five years, has looked vulnerable so far this season. He hasn8217;t reached a final and has lost thrice.
8220;Today it8217;s hard to judge, because Mardy took everything on the rise; not many rallies out there,8221; said Federer.
Fish was ranked 98th, and Federer hadn8217;t lost to anyone so low since No. 101 Richard Gasquet in April 2005 at the Monte Carlo Masters. Fish jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first set. He broke Federer to start the second, and the Swiss saved two match points at 5-1 down before it ended.
