At least 2,000 people have been killed in over a year of religious violence in the Maluku and north Maluku provinces, collectively known as the Spice Islands, or Moluccas, during Dutch colonial rule.

The fighting, triggered by a minor traffic accident involving a Christian and a Muslim in the Maluku provincial capital Ambon in January last year, has since spread throughout the archipelagic province.

Sporadic outbreaks of sectarian violence elsewhere in Indonesia have been quickly contained by the security forces.
