NEW DELHI, November 6: Additional Sessions Judge D.S. Pawariya today sentenced a man’s wife, mother-in-law and brother-in-law to life imprisonment for burning him to death in April last year.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 500 each on Hukumchand’s wife Baby, her brother Sanjay and mother Satya Devi. The victim reportedly had a strained relationship with his wife. The couple had three children. According to some of the witnesses produced by the prosecution, Hukumchand did not like Baby’s frequent visits to her sister’s house.

The incident took place on April 29, 1997, when Hukumchand went to bring Baby back from her sister’s house in the Anand Parbat police station area. In his order, the judge said: “In his dying declaration, the deceased clearly stated that Satya Devi poured kerosene oil on him, Baby caught hold of him and then Rajesh set his clothes afire”.
