Widespread violence marred the elections to the SGPC on Sunday. While it claimed no lives 8212; five persons received gunshot wounds while scores of others suffered cuts and bruises 8212; liquor, which played a major role in the elections, killed two.

Pritam Singh alias Ghoder 47, and Narinder Singh alias Tipu 42, residents of Nai Abadi, died at Verka in Amritsar East after overdosing on liquor.

Earlier, police were forced to open fire in Teja Vila village of Dera Baba Nanak segment when a clash between the workers of former minister Nirmal Singh Kahlon and supporters of Panthic Morcha candidate Amrik Singh Khalilpur threatened to get out of hand.
