
JANUARY 18: The director of a private finance company, Jayesh Mirani, who was recently arrested for committing a fraud of Rs. 96 lakh by using fake National Savings Certificates NSC, was remanded to police custody till January 29, by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate C L thool.
According to the prosecution, Mirani and an associate Mahesh Panchal alias Vivek Shukla, had prepared at least 966 fake NSC certificates of Rs 10,000 each and lodged the same as surety in the Cooperative Bank of Ahmedabad Limited, Mandvi branch and withdrew an amount of Rs 96 lakh against it from the bank. The certificates were in the name of Vivek Shukla and were shown to have been issued by the Sarai Mali Khan post office in Lucknow.
Police, however, discovered that the particular post office had not issued the certificates. The latter had said that the verification forwarded by the accused was fake.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Madurai Ltd, Mulund Branch, and the Samasta Nagar Cooperative Bank, Fort, have sumbitted similar complaints of fraud to the tune of Rs 6 crore, by the accused. The Sarasawt Bank, Worli Branch, have also registered a complant of cheating and fraud against the accused with the Worli police.
