FEROZEPORE, July 12: As many as 161 of the 240 government senior secondary schools in Faridkot division and 30 of the 53 schools in Ferozepore district have been without principals for more than two years and one year, respectively, according to Ishar Singh Chadha, former press secretary, Punjab State Education Department Ministerial Staff Association.

Ishar Singh said that 10 posts of senior lecturers (gazetted) have been lying vacant in the Service Training Centre as well as in the District Institute of Elementary Education and Training (DIET), Faridkot, for the past one year.

He pointed out that the DIET at Ferozepore, inaugurated in 1991, has had no hostel building for the 150 Elementary Teachers Training (ETT) students, even though as per departmental rules DIET cannot function without the provision of residential accommodation for ETT students. The acute shortage of staff, combined with the absence of heads, has caused a deterioration in the standard of education in these schools and has led to deep frustration among the parents, who hold the state government responsible for the state of affairs.Likewise, there is strong resentment among the teaching staff, who hold the SAD-BJP government responsible for the inordinate delay of five years in releasing the promotion list of lecturers.
