Less than a month after household labour was brought under the purview of The Child Labour Act, an NGO today claimed to have rescued a 10-year-old girl who had been working in the house of B Rashid, private secretary to the Andhra Pradesh information minister Shabbir Ali.

The NGO, MV Foundation, led by Magsaysay awardee Shanta Sinha alleged that Niloufer had been beaten and abused. A case has been registered.

Raheemuddin, MV Foundation8217;s legal secretary said that Niloufer was rescued at about 4 pm today. Niloufer was taken to the Amberpet PS, where the NGO filed a complaint of wrongful confinement. An FIR has been registered under the Child Labour Prevention and Prohibition Act.

8220;I was not at home when this NGO came8230;Whatever the child labour Act provides for will happen, and I would not like to say anything else,8217;8217; Rashid said.

Labour Officer Hyderabad II, Ram Chandraiyah said, 8220;As per the girl8217;s statement, she has been working in this house for the past 20 days but we don8217;t know the nature of work8230;The girl told the police that she had been beaten by Rashid8217;s wife but we didn8217;t see any injuries.8217;8217;

According to the labour officer, Niloufer, is originally from the Warangal district. She told the police that her mother, two sisters and brother are also working in other houses.
