‘Till date my father…’: Akash Ambani on how living under one roof taught him work ethic from parents Mukesh and Nita

What truly stood out in Akash’s comments was the glimpse into the daily discipline and personal commitment he sees from his parents, even now.

When Akash Ambani speaks about his inspirations, it’s not corporate icons or global entrepreneurs he names first — it’s his parents.

At Mumbai Tech Week earlier this year, during a conversation with Harsh Jain, CEO of Dream Sports, the Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman opened up about how growing up in a tightly bonded household shaped his work ethic and attention to detail. “The biggest inspiration, without a doubt, is the family we’ve grown up with,” he said. “We’ve all lived under one roof for 32 years, and inspiration is never too far, especially from both my parents.”

What truly stood out in his comments was the glimpse into the daily discipline and personal commitment he sees from his parents, even now. “Till date my father clears each and every email that is sent to him, and he does it till 2 am at night, and he’s working for the fourth decade of his working life. And that’s where the inspiration really comes from,” Akash shared, adding that his mother, Nita Ambani, brings her own style of focused dedication: “She will be staring at the same thing — we share a joint passion for cricket — and we’re watching the same TV, but the small little details that she notices is something that you can draw inspiration out of.”

But, how does growing up in such a household shape an individual’s personal approach to productivity and boundaries?

Shrikari, clinical psychologist and psychotherapist at Dhee Hospitals, tells indianexpress.com, “Children raised in environments that prioritise high achievement and extended work hours often internalise these values early on. They may grow up believing that productivity is synonymous with worth, which can fuel ambition and drive, but also set the stage for blurred boundaries between work and personal life.”

While such role modeling can instill discipline, resilience, and a strong work ethic, he says that it “may also make it harder for individuals to disengage or recognise the importance of rest.” Being raised in hustle-oriented environments may also subtly reinforce the idea that taking breaks equates to falling behind.

“It’s important for individuals in such environments to actively reflect on what balance means to them personally, and to build a relationship with work that also prioritises well-being,” stresses the expert.

Psychological value of attention to detail

Akash Ambani spoke about drawing inspiration from the ‘small nuances’ his parents notice. Shrikari mentions, “Attention to detail often reflects a mindful and observant mindset. Psychologically, it enhances problem-solving, creativity, and decision-making by allowing individuals to notice patterns or inconsistencies that others might overlook. This trait, when nurtured, can build focus, patience, and an appreciation for complexity.”

Yes, Shrikari says that attention to detail can be cultivated. “It usually develops through modeling, consistent reinforcement, and an environment that values observation and curiosity.”

Encouraging engagement with multiple skills, not just academics, can further strengthen attention to detail. Exposure to diverse areas like music, sport, art, and storytelling enhances outlook and fosters creative problem-solving.
