Navratri September 2025: Out of the four Navratris – Magha (winter), Chaitra (spring), Ashadha (monsoon) and Sharad or Shardiya (autumn) – it is considered to be the most important.
The nine-day Shardiya Navratri, dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, is observed in the month of Ashwin, usually between September and October.
This year, it will begin on Monday, September 22, 2025, with the Ghadasthapana rite, and conclude on Thursday, October 2, with Dussehra/Vijayadashami/’Maha Navratri’.
People will fast for nine days, or the first and last two days, with Durga Ashtami being celebrated on Tuesday, September 30, and Maha Navami on Wednesday, October 1.
The festival represents the feminine power, Shakti, which combines the powers of Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (destroyer).
It also commemorates the destruction of Mahishasura, a demon, by Goddess Durga following a nine-day struggle that concluded on the tenth day as Vijayadashami. She is therefore known as Mahishasuramardini, or the slayer of Mahishasur.
According to mythological legend, Lord Ram worshipped all nine forms of Goddess Durga before facing Ravana to gain her powers and defeat him.
Lord Ram gained back Sita on the tenth day, commonly known as Vijaya Dashmi or Dusshera.
Women wear nine different colours on each day of Navratri. The colour of the day is picked on a weekday. Each weekday is ruled by one of the planets or Navgrahas, and accordingly, colours are assigned to each day.
