‘Family group pe aata hai…’: Vikrant Massey reflects on the power of his family and wife’s support in his path to success

“Mujhe 100 percent pata hai ki raat ko mere maata aur mere pita gaadi mein baithenge, jahan unko hoarding dikhenge wo wahan jayenge aur tasweer khich ke aayenge,” said Vikrant.

Family support can be an invisible yet powerful force in shaping a person’s path to success, particularly in the competitive and high-stakes entertainment world.

12th Fail actor Vikrant Massey recently shared how his family’s unwavering encouragement, expressed through small gestures, plays a vital role in his journey. In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, when asked if he believes in the concept of “lady luck”, Massey replied, “I believe in luck. Lady luck, parents ki blessings, ya biwi ki hi jo dua maangti hai wo… badon ka aashirwaad, family jo apke liye prayer karti hai, wo saari cheezein I think wo lagti hai… wo hota hai (Lady luck, parents’ blessings, or the prayers my wife makes… the blessings of elders, the prayers from family for you — all those things, I think, they work… they make a difference).”

He believes that his family’s constant prayers and support are being answered, allowing him to navigate the challenges of his profession with confidence and resilience. Mishra recalled reading somewhere that Massey’s family took pictures of posters of the film wherever they saw them after 12th Fail was released. “Wo aaj bhi jaate hain. Abhi jaise release ke kareeb jab Sabarmati ke hoarding lagne shuru ho jayenge toh mujhe 100 percent pata hai ki raat ko mere maata aur mere pita gaadi mein baithenge, jahan unko hoarding dikhenge wo wahan jayenge aur tasweer khich ke aayenge (They still go even today. Now, like when Sabarmati’s hoardings start going up around the release, I’m 100 percent sure my mother and father will get in the car at night, go wherever they see the hoardings, and take pictures there).”

When asked if the photos are shared on the family group, he agrees, “Family group pe aata hai… kabhi paper mein kuch aata hai toh sabse pehle family group par aata hai (It comes on the family group… If something is in the newspaper, it first comes on the family group).”

While personal talent and hard work are critical, a reliable support system can often make the difference in managing stress, enhancing motivation, and improving overall performance. But what is it about family support that has such a profound impact on mental well-being and professional success?

Influence on an individual’s mental resilience and ability to handle professional challenges

Neha Cadabam, senior psychologist at Mindtalk, tells indianexpress.com, “Family support serves as a foundation for mental resilience, providing a strong emotional anchor in times of stress.”

She adds, “Research in Psychology and Health (Lakey & Cohen, 2000) has shown that family support can help individuals navigate professional challenges by boosting their confidence and emotional stability. When individuals know they have family members who believe in them and are rooting for their success, it strengthens their sense of purpose and self-worth, essential components of resilience.”

Psychological benefits of having a strong support system

A strong support system offers multiple psychological benefits, notes Cadabam, particularly for those in high-stress professions. “One primary benefit is reduced anxiety. When individuals feel supported, they tend to experience less fear of failure, as they know they are valued beyond their professional achievements. This, in turn, reduces performance anxiety, helping them approach challenges with greater composure.”

For those in high-stakes fields, knowing they have a dependable support network can also foster a sense of security and stability, highlights Cadabam, encouraging risk-taking and innovation. With the reassurance that they have “back-up” in times of need, individuals are more likely to embrace challenges that require mental resilience and perseverance.

Advice for individuals lacking family support

Cadabam says, “For those who may not have the benefit of close family support, cultivating alternative support networks is both possible and beneficial. Support can come from friends, colleagues, mentors, or even community groups, all of which can offer empathy, encouragement, and perspective.”

Building these networks involves reaching out, investing in friendships, and engaging in shared interests or support groups, she notes. Mentorship, in particular, can serve as a valuable alternative to family support, as mentors provide guidance and insight rooted in experience, helping to build confidence and direction. In addition, professional counselling or therapy can offer structured support.
