Vicky Kaushal regrets not knowing how to swim; here’s why it is a crucial life skill
"You may be an excellent endurance athlete on the ground but breathing in the aquatic environment is different and more challenging," Shubhankar Thosar, swimming and water polo coach, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune said

The only regret Vicky Kaushal has is not learning how to swim. In an interview, the Tauba Tauba dancer said: “I just wish I had learned swimming. I am a grown up but I don’t know swimming. When we go on vacations like to the Maldives, my friends jump off the boat. I keep sitting there.”
The Bad Newz actor further opened up about his first-ever role that required him to swim. “When I got Masaan, I didn’t know the script. Anurag Kashyap, one of the producers, called me and asked, ‘you know swimming, right?…all you have to do is to swim’. It was then that I realised that I had to swim in the Ganges at night. At that time, I didn’t confess because I didn’t want to lose out on the role. So, I learned swimming and managed to do the scenes,” Vicky told Miss Malini.
But why is knowing how to swim so important?
Shubhankar Thosar, swimming and water polo coach, Deccan Gymkhana, Pune mentioned that there is no age limit to learn swimming as it is a life skill of value that can save one in dire circumstances.
According to Thosar, swimming helps to build stamina as well as keep calm in the water. “It is not an in-born skill so it needs to be learned. It is also something which can’t be attemped without basic knowledge. To break it down further, you may be an excellent endurance athlete on the ground but breathing in the aquatic environment is different and more challenging,” he told indianexpress.com.
This involves a step-by-step introduction beginning with proper breathing, getting in and out of the aquatic environment, floating in the water, and ensuring that you can coordinate your limbs underwater while overcoming fear when doing basic swimming strokes. “At the same time, one also grows into a potential lifesaver. Water safety lessons and rescue skills appropriate to the capability of swimmers are always good for children and adults,” said Thosar.

*Stand in chest-deep water, facing the wall of the pool.
*Place your hands on the pool edge.
*Bend over at the waist, breathe in, and place your face in the water.
*Forcefully blow out the air in your lungs through your mouth and nose.
*Tilt the head to one side as you exhale toward the water’s surface.
*When your mouth emerges above the water, inhale.
*Repeat the exercise.
