Washing your face – a seemingly simple act shrouded in debate. Should you cleanse in the morning to greet the day with a fresh canvas, or reserve it for nighttime to remove the day’s grime?

Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist & dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics weighs in on this age-old question, revealing how your skin type dictates the ideal face-washing routine.

The cleansing quandary: To wash or not to wash in the morning?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, said Dr Kapoor. Some believe using your face wash in the morning eliminates sweat and oil built up overnight, while others advocate for using face wash at night to remove makeup and environmental pollutants. Oily or Acne-Prone Skin: Rejoice! Cleansing twice a day can be your saving grace. For these skin types, using your face wash twice a day holds more appeal.

  • Morning Cleanse: Prepares your skin for the day, removing overnight oils and allowing better absorption of skincare products like sunscreen and moisturizer.
  • Night Cleanse: Essential for removing makeup, dirt, and pollution, accumulated aggressors that can damage your skin.
However, be mindful! Excessive washing can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.

Dry or Sensitive Skin: Tread carefully. Over-washing can disrupt your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Consider a gentle cleanse at night to remove makeup and pollutants.

Different skin types should use face wash at different times of the day:

Dry Skin: Once a day (ideally at night) is often enough to avoid stripping natural oils.

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin: Twice a day (morning and night) helps manage oil production and prevent breakouts, but remember, moderation is key.

Combination Skin: A gentle cleanser used twice a day can help control oil in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) while being kind to drier areas.

Listen to your skin

Experiment with different cleansing routines and observe your skin’s reaction. Dryness, irritation, or excessive oiliness are signs you need to adjust. Consulting a dermatologist can help create a personalised skincare routine tailored to your unique needs.

Remember, a clean and healthy canvas is the foundation for a radiant complexion. By understanding your skin type and following the right cleansing routine, you’ll be on your way to achieving healthy, glowing skin!
