Using teeth gems can damage your dental health, especially if you’re doing them at home

Dr Madhavi Shetty, endodontist, The Funcdent, emphasised that while they are primarily chosen for their aesthetic appeal, it's essential to consider the potential risks and consequences they may have on your oral health.

With HBO’s Euphoria, a new era of makeup dawned, full of glitzy gems and accessories inspired by the Y2k era. Now, this glitz is being lent to our teeth as well with tooth gems gaining prominence again. At first, the Y2k trend started gaining popularity last year when ASAP Rocky proposed to Rihanna in his music video with a teeth grill that read, “Marry Me”. From Rihanna, and Hailey Bieber to Rosalia, Billie Eilish and Drake, all of your favourite celebs have been seen sporting teeth gems in the past year.

Dr Ekta Khatri, prosthodontist, The Funcdent, explained that tooth gems are small, jewel-like decorations that are affixed to the surface of the tooth. Grills, on the other hand, are made of metal or acrylic and are designed to fit over the entire tooth. Both tooth gems and grills can be custom-made to match the wearer’s style and taste, she said.

Can teeth gems affect dental health?

According to Dr Shetty and Khatri, these are some dental health implications teeth gems can have.

Tooth enamel damage: The application of tooth gems often involves the use of adhesive materials and slight enamel abrasion. Enamel is essential for protecting your teeth from decay and sensitivity. Any damage to the enamel can increase the risk of cavities and tooth sensitivity.

Tooth decay: Tooth gems and grills can create spaces where food particles and bacteria can get trapped, leading to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease if proper oral hygiene is not maintained.

In some cases, they can even cause staining and discolouration of the teeth, as the metal caps or bonding materials can interfere with the natural colour of the teeth. Additionally, certain types of metal can react with the saliva in the mouth, causing discolouration.

Gum irritation and inflammation: The presence of grills, especially if they do not fit well or are worn for extended periods, can lead to gum irritation, inflammation, and even sores.

Speech and pronunciation changes: Grills, especially those that cover a large portion of the teeth, can affect speech and pronunciation. It may take some time to adapt to speaking with them, and there could be a risk of developing a lisp or other speech difficulties.

Tooth sensitivity: Tooth gems can potentially make teeth more sensitive, especially if the enamel is compromised during the application process. Increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages can be uncomfortable.

Should you put them on at home?

Dr Khatri stated that it is possible to apply tooth gems and grills yourself, but it is not recommended.

“The application of these accessories requires a certain level of expertise and should only be done by a qualified dental professional. Not only will they be able to ensure that the gem or grill is applied correctly, but they can also provide advice on how to care for your new dental accessory.”

Dr Shetty also emphasised that a professional should do it and they need to be regularly monitored to ensure they are not causing any damage to the enamel of the teeth. “Additionally, it is important to practice good oral hygiene to ensure the health of your teeth and gums,” she added.
