Once in a while, we all give into our cravings and munch on our favourite things. But is it a good practice to reach out for a few slices of cake and have it as your breakfast? Samantha Ruth Prabhu is enjoying the festive fervour with Christmas around the corner and munching on some cake for breakfast.

“Cake for breakfast,” Samantha said, with a picture that showcased a piece of cake alongside a mug of black coffee.

Is it advisable to have cake for breakfast? What to keep in mind?

Manvi Lohia, registered dietitian, head, holistic health, and international business, Ekaanta, Haridwar said it requires a balanced view of nutrition, lifestyle, and individual health needs. “Cake, typically high in sugars and refined flours, provides a quick energy spike but can lead to a rapid crash in blood sugar levels. This can increase hunger and cravings throughout the day, potentially leading to overeating. For those with conditions like diabetes or insulin resistance, this can pose significant health risks,” said Lohia.

Nutritionally, cakes lack essential elements for a wholesome breakfast. According to Lohia, a balanced morning meal should ideally include a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, and healthy fats. “These components offer sustained energy, aid in metabolic functions, and contribute to overall health. Proteins are crucial for muscle repair, fibers for digestion and satiety, and healthy fats for brain health,” said Lohia.

Shruti K Bhardwaj, chief dietician, Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad said that opting for whole grains, fruits, yogurt, or eggs can contribute essential nutrients that support overall well-being.

However, it’s also important to consider the psychological aspects of eating. “An occasional indulgence, such as cake for breakfast, can fit into a balanced diet if it brings joy and doesn’t lead to feelings of deprivation, which can often result in unhealthy eating patterns. Moderation and understanding individual dietary needs are key,” said Lohia.

For a nutritious start to the day, Lohia recommended options rich in whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. “These provide a more balanced and nutrient-dense meal,” said Lohia.

In conclusion, while having cake for breakfast occasionally, as seen with Samantha, isn’t the most nutritious choice, it’s not inherently detrimental in the context of a balanced and varied diet. “It’s important to focus on overall dietary patterns rather than isolated food choices and to consider individual health conditions and dietary needs,” said Lohia.
