She may look just as she did when she played a talk show host in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but Neelam Kothari Soni insists that she’s grown immensely over the years through “personal and professional experiences.” Now more confident—a trait that she feels “comes with age and experience”—the Hum Saath Saath Hain actor decided to make a “fabulous” comeback to the screen with Netflix’s Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives to reveal a new side of herself.
When asked how closely the show’s portrayal aligns with her real self, Neelam told indianexpress.com that while she’s far more private in real life, certain aspects like values and friendships are shown just as they are. Among other things, the yesteryear actor also opened up about facing the camera after so many years, embracing motherhood, her marriage, the idea of fashion, and the secret to her looks. Read the edited excerpts below:
Neelam Kothari Soni: I’d been out of the limelight, focusing on my family, jewellery business, and leading a more private life. But when Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives was presented to me, I saw it as a unique opportunity to show people a different side of me. Fans mostly remember me from my acting days, but I wanted to share more of my real life—my friendships, family, and experiences. It was definitely a step out of my comfort zone, but I felt it was the right time. There’s something empowering about owning your story, even in the public eye.
Neelam Kothari Soni: “Neelam 2.0” is an interesting way to put it. This phase is definitely different. When I was acting in films, I was still figuring out my place in the world. Now, I’m more settled, confident, and comfortable in my skin. I’ve evolved not just professionally but as a person. Running a business, raising a family, and returning to the spotlight — these experiences have shaped me. That confidence, I believe, comes with age and experience, and I embrace it wholeheartedly.
Neelam Kothari Soni: I believe in balance regarding fitness and diet. I try to keep my routine consistent with a mix of Pilates, strength training, and yoga. As for my diet, I focus on whole foods and stay hydrated but don’t deprive myself. Being fit is about feeling good from within, not just looking good.
Neelam Kothari Soni: Oh, absolutely. I believe in treating myself and not being too hard on myself when it comes to food. My guilty pleasure is chocolate. I have a sweet tooth, so indulging in some good dark chocolate or a rich dessert is my ultimate cheat-day treat.
Neelam Kothari Soni: The show has reintroduced me to a larger audience, but I see it more as a platform to discuss things women my age often shy away from. I don’t necessarily view it as a stepping stone for a new acting career; it’s more about having honest conversations. Aeing to menopause, or any of the other topics we touch on, I believe it’s important to normalise these discussions. If it leads to more projects, great, but my focus is on authenticity and being true to myself.
Neelam Kothari Soni: Social media is a double-edged sword. It’s wonderful for connecting with fans and showcasing your work, but it also brings scrutiny. There’s pressure to present yourself a certain way, which can affect mental health. Back in the day, we didn’t have this kind of access, so things felt less immediate. Today, I take it with a pinch of salt, reminding myself that no one is perfect, and it’s important to take breaks from the digital world when needed.. Mental well-being is a priority, so I’m mindful of not getting too consumed by it.
Neelam Kothari Soni: Season 3 is packed with more drama, more laughter, and more insights into our lives. It’s a fun, unapologetic look at our friendships and the dynamics that come with being in the public eye. As for why Mumbai should win? It’s home—the city that never sleeps and a place filled with energy and spirit. We embody that essence on the show, so I’d say Mumbai is always a winner.
Neelam Kothari Soni: My fashion sense has definitely evolved. In my younger years, I followed trends more, but now I value timeless, classic pieces. Comfort is key, and I gravitate towards simple yet elegant styles. Less is more, and I find myself gravitating towards styles that are understated but chic. I still enjoy experimenting with fashion now and then, but I believe fashion should always reflect who you are at your core, and for me, that means effortless style.
Neelam Kothari Soni: Parenting has taught me patience and the importance of leading by example. As a mother, you’re constantly learning, and every day brings new lessons. The most important thing I’ve tried to teach my daughter is to be kind, confident, and true to herself. I want her to grow up knowing that she has the power to be whoever she wants, and that she should always treat others with respect and empathy.
Neelam Kothari Soni: Yes, we’re very different, but I think that’s what makes our relationship work. We balance each other out. The key to a successful marriage is mutual respect and understanding. We give each other space to be ourselves and support each other’s passions. Communication is also crucial—it helps us navigate life’s ups and downs together.
Neelam Kothari Soni: I’m quite the homebody! I love spending time at home, reading, working on jewellery designs, or just being with family. While I may seem glamorous on screen, I cherish my quiet moments.
Neelam Kothari Soni: Returning to acting after such a long break was challenging. It wasn’t just about memorising lines but overcoming self-doubt and finding the confidence to face the camera again. The industry has evolved so much since my early days, and adapting was challenging but also incredibly rewarding.
