The celebrations usually begin two days prior to the birthday with an Akhand Path during which the Guru Granth Sahib is read continuously for 48 hours. On the day before the birthday of Guru Nanakji, people organise a procession which is led by the Panj Pyaras. The Sikh flag, known as the Nishan Sahib and the Palanquin of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, are carried as part of the procession.
