Indians swear by ghee, hailing it as a nutrition-packed superfood. However, its lipid profile may raise some eyebrows and prompt fitness enthusiasts to hesitate before adding it to their routine. While doctors suggest incorporating ghee into your daily meals, what happens when you eliminate it?

Indianexpress.com spoke to a clinical expert and found out the risks and rewards of consuming this double-edged sword.

What happens when you stop abruptly?

“If you abruptly stop eating ghee, your body will start to detoxify itself. While some may find this transition a little harder on their digestive system, others will love the change,” said Dr Neeti Sharma, Head Dietitian, Marengo Asia Hospitals.

“For those undergoing weight loss programs and diets, avoiding ghee permanently may help, but it will also stop absorption of nutrients and won’t provide valuable nutrients essential to your diet,” she added.

According to her, if you pause ghee intake for a while, the lack of trans fats in your diet may help stabilize cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular issues.

“One teaspoon of ghee a day should suffice. It is important to consume ghee in moderation as going overboard may cause heart problems as well as clog your arteries,” said Sharma.

Health benefits of ghee

“Ghee has healthy fats which help the digestive system, strengthen the immune system, and are rich in vitamins. It is also anti-inflammatory and rich in properties that help prevent cancer. Ghee is also used to treat burns and is known to improve skin elasticity,” shared Sharma.

“Ghee contains a high concentration of fats and omega-3 fatty acids, known to promote cardiovascular disease. If you consume a spoonful of ghee daily, you can see reduced serum cholesterol levels along with decreased coronary artery disease,” she added.

According to Dr Archana Batra, a dietician and certified diabetes educator, ghee’s unique composition makes it an ideal choice for individuals managing diabetes. “It has a low glycemic index, helping regulate blood sugar levels and providing a sustained release of energy throughout the day. Furthermore, ghee contains butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory properties, promoting gut health and overall well-being,” she said.

Consuming ghee in the morning can aid in the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from other foods, enhancing their bioavailability. “Additionally, ghee is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit joint health,” she added.

However, ghee contains oxidized cholesterol, unlike fresh butter; therefore, she warned that consuming an excessive amount of ghee may tip the scales and increase the risk of heart disease instead.
