Sawan Somvar is a significant observance for devotees in Hinduism. During this time, people pay homage to Lord Shiva and seek his blessings by observing fasts, offering prayers, and engaging in spiritual practices. Fasting during these auspicious Mondays holds great significance for devotees. However, it is crucial to prioritise hydration, especially in the monsoon weather. As such, as you keep a fast on the third Sawan Somvar, make sure to sip on healthy drinks to maintain your hydration levels. "Staying hydrated during Sawan Somwar fasting is essential. You can do so by drinking small sips of water throughout the day between sunrise and sunset," said Sweta Bose, Nutrition and Dietetics, RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, Kolkata. She added that one can also consume hydrating fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges during dawn and dusk to replenish electrolytes. "Avoid caffeine and sugary drinks, as they can dehydrate you," she said. Agreeing, Ankita Ghoshal Bisht, dietician in charge, Primus Super Speciality Hospital said that there are several healthy and hydrating drinks suitable for Sawan Somvar fasts. "Coconut water is a popular choice as it replenishes electrolytes and provides natural hydration. Other options include buttermilk, lemonade (without sugar), homemade fruit-infused water, and herbal teas. These beverages not only help in maintaining hydration but also provide essential nutrients and antioxidants," she said. Bose added that Sawan Somvar fasts not only have a religious significance but also offer an opportunity to detox your digestive system. As such, making a healthy choice during a fast is important as the body is prone to various infections due to weather conditions. One must keep the following things in mind: *Small and frequent meals: This fast purpose is to include superfoods in the diet that give a boost to the body's immune system. *Include fruits in diet: Fruits are rich in folate fibre vitamin C and potassium which keep the body energetic throughout the day. *Include dairy products, like lassi, milk, and buttermilk, to keep the body hydrated and get enough nutrients. *While fasting, do not starve. Keep eating fruits and nuts. *Include Saboo dana and kuttu ka atta (buckwheat flour), singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour), and rajgira ka atta (amaranth flour). *Replace table salt with rock salt or sendha namak for cooking recipes. *Include healthy snacks like roasted makhana, nuts, pumpkin halwa, dates, and walnut lassi to handle sugar cravings. *Swap sugar with jaggery. *Fasting also requires your body to rest and relax. 7-8 hours of good quality sleep can keep the person active. 📣 For more lifestyle news, follow us on Instagram | Twitter | Facebook and don't miss out on the latest updates!
