The scorching summer heat coupled with high temperatures and humidity can afflict us with a number of health issues. This makes it essential for us to not only take care of our health by consuming a nutritious diet but also our skin by safeguarding it from harmful UV rays. And when it comes to our skin, one of the major problems we face is acne, which tends to flare up during the summer months.

“Summers can increase the chances of acne and breakouts for some individuals. Heat and humidity can lead to increased oil production, clogged pores, and bacterial growth, which can contribute to acne formation. Additionally, excessive sweating can also worsen acne,” Dr Ramdas, Senior Dermatologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad told indianexpress.com.

As such, while a proper diet and a tested beauty regime can protect you from acne and pimple breakouts, there are also a number of home remedies that can come to your rescue. Wondering what they are? We’ve got you covered, all thanks to Rujuta Diwekar, a nutritionist, who shared three simple tips to beat the summer heat and combat acne, pimples, and breakouts.

Drink one glass of variyali sherbet (fennel seeds) daily

This is the summer drink of Gujarat that they have used for years, informed Diwekar. Variyali sherbet is, simply, saunf, water, and sugar mixed together. “It helps maintain oral hygiene and also works as a digestive aid. One glass of variyali sherbet every day is recommended,” she added.

Concurring, Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD-Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram said, “Fennel seeds have traditionally been used for their medicinal properties, including potential benefits for acne treatment. They possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that may help reduce acne symptoms. The seeds contain compounds like anethole and limonene, which exhibit antioxidant properties that can help soothe inflammation and combat bacteria associated with acne. Additionally, fennel seeds are rich in antioxidants that may support overall skin health.”

He, however, stressed that while incorporating fennel seeds into your diet may provide some benefits, consulting with a healthcare professional for comprehensive acne management is advisable.

Soak vala roots (vetiver) in your drinking water

The nutritionist noted that in Northern India, it is common to notice vala roots/vetiver/ khus on the coolers. A lot of homes also have traditional curtains weaved out of this ingredient, too, as it promotes cool air in the house throughout the day without any ecological damage. “You can use this root by mixing a little quantity with water. Keep it for about 3 hours and its ready to be used,” she said.

One can use this water for 3 days and then dry it in the sun, and again use it for another 3 days before discarding it. However, if you don’t want to waste the roots, you can use it as a body scrub, the nutritionist advised.

Dr Singh said that vetiver contains compounds that exhibit antibacterial and antimicrobial effects, which can help combat the bacteria associated with acne and prevent further infection. “It may have the ability to balance sebum production, which can help prevent clogged pores and reduce the likelihood of acne formation,” he added.

Finish your bath with half a bucket of water with some sandalwood (chandan) added to it

To make chandan at home, take a plain marble stone, add a few drops of water on it, and keep rubbing the sandalwood on this stone until you get a paste, demonstrated Diwekar. “Finish your bath with chandan water. You will feel a cooling sensation. It will make your face fresh, glowing, and free from not only pimples but acne marks as well. This is a simple trick you should follow,” she said.

Dr Ramdas, however, differed with the claim and said bathing in sandalwood alone may not effectively treat acne. “But, sandalwood does have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that may aid in reducing acne-causing bacteria and inflammation. Using skincare products containing sandalwood or seeking professional advice for acne treatment is recommended,” he said.

The dermatologist suggested a few DIY remedies that can help treat acne, including tea tree oil, honey and cinnamon masks, or aloe vera gel, which have antimicrobial and soothing properties. “However, it’s important to use them with caution and discontinue use if they irritate the skin,” he said.

Concluding, the expert said, “Remember, it’s always best to consult with a dermatologist for a personalised assessment and treatment plan based on your specific skin condition.”
