Morning sickness is extremely common during pregnancy; here’s how you can manage it

Despite its name, morning sickness can strike at any time of the day. Sometimes morning sickness is so severe that it turns into hyperemesis gravidarum. This is when the nausea and vomiting cause serious fluid loss or loss of more than 5% of pre-pregnancy body weight.

Morning sickness is a very common and unpleasant part of pregnancy. Many to-be mothers experience this feeling, which is caused due to the surge of the pregnancy hormone Human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG. Although it is known as ‘morning sickness’, women can feel nauseous and feel like vomiting anytime during the day. According to Dr Danny Laliwala, Consultant Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, in cases of excessive morning sickness, thyroid hormones could also be playing a role. “Nonetheless, it usually subsides after the third month of pregnancy,” he said.

According to a study in the American Family Physician, morning sickness affects nearly 75 per cent of pregnant women. Sometimes, morning sickness is so severe that it turns into hyperemesis gravidarum — a condition where nausea and vomiting cause serious fluid loss or loss of more than 5 per cent of pre-pregnancy body weight.

Highlighting the same, Dr Amina Khalid, Obstetrician-Gynaecologist wrote on Instagram, “Morning sickness is the most common complaint a woman faces during her first trimester, and especially in their first pregnancy due to the rising hormone levels in your body,” adding that it is a very normal thing to face, and in fact, is a sign of healthy growing pregnancy.

Here are eight tips to reduce morning sickness:

*Keep rusk or bland biscuits/crackers at your bedside table. Have them in the morning before you get out of the bed. Dr Laliwala explained that pregnant women should sit on the bed for 5 minutes, eat a small piece of toast, again wait for 5 minutes, and then get up and brush. “This helps reduce acidity and prevention of morning sickness. They can also have besan ladoo.”

*Avoid drinking tea or coffee on empty stomach or early in morning. “Tea and coffee, when had on empty stomach, stimulates the production of acid that leads to heartburn and morning sickness. It is best to have tea and coffee, that too a light one, along with breakfast,” said the doctor.

*Having ginger tea or chewing on a piece of raw ringer can help too.

*Eating a full course meal may not be possible now. Have small, frequent meals at about 3-4 hours interval.

*Cut down on spicy and friend items in your meals. They may cause acidity, which will worsen your nausea. Dr Laliwala shared that spicy and fried food will stimulate the stomach cells to produce too much of acid, thereby increasing acidity. In the early months of pregnancy, one should eat food more on the bland side.

*Drink fluids in between meals and not after. Moreover, the expert recommended adding a pinch of salt, sugar and lemon to the fluids as it will keep the electrolytes in balance and prevent giddiness and fainting episodes.

*Don’t lie down immediately after having meals. “One should have a light walk for around 10 minutes after meals. This will aid in digestion of the food and prevent feeling of bloating,” said Dr Laliwala.

*Brush your teeth before you go to bed. “Brushing teeth before sleep is useful to prevent dental caries and tooth decay. It also removes the acidity from the food particles stuck in between the teeth,” the expert noted.

Additionally, Dr Khalid noted that you need to get your thyroid blood test and liver profile done in case of excessive vomiting, and most importantly get adequate rest.

Concluding, she said that contact your doctor if you feel weak or dehydrated, vomiting doesn’t subside with the medications and home remedies or if vomiting is so excessive that it hinders your day-to-day activities.
