Who does not like eating shakarkandi or sweet potatoes in the monsoon? These sweet and starchy root vegetables prove to be a dietary gem during the monsoon season, according to Ushakiran Sisodia, registered dietician and clinical nutritionist at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai.

“Their versatility in preparation, be it baking or roasting, makes them an ideal addition to the seasonal menu,” she added. Baking or roasting them not only makes for a warm and comforting meal but also ensures they are free of any monsoon-related contaminants, Sisodia explained. “Their immune-boosting properties, owing to their high Vitamin A content, can be beneficial during this season when infections are prevalent.”

Rich in Vitamin A: A single sweet potato fulfills an impressive 400 per cent of the daily Vitamin A requirement. Vitamin A plays a pivotal role in maintaining ocular health, strengthening the immune system, and ensuring the efficient functioning of essential organs like the heart and kidneys. Moreover, it contributes positively to the reproductive system.

Cancer prevention: The anticancer properties found in sweet potatoes, attributed to the presence of beta-carotene and other antioxidants, may provide therapeutic benefits to cancer patients and further boost immune function.
