Snoring is caused when airflow through the mouth and nose gets partially blocked during sleep. This can happen due to various reasons, including nasal congestion, enlarged tonsils, obesity, or a deviated septum. For relief, people try nasal sprays and drops, and nose strips; but social media has been vouching for nasal ease clips, also called nasal clippers.
To know more about them, we turned to Dr Tapaswi Krishna, lung transplant, interventional pulmonologist and sleep medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad who said that the effectiveness of a nose clip or a nose strip in controlling snoring depends on the cause.
Notably, a nose strip is a small adhesive band that is applied across the bridge of the nose. It contains flexible strips that can be lifted on either side of the nose, opening the nasal passages. “This mechanical widening reduces nasal airflow resistance, making it easier to breathe through the nose. Nose strips are commonly used to alleviate nasal congestion due to colds or allergies and are often employed by individuals who snore because of nasal obstruction,” said Dr Krishna.
A nose clip, on the other hand, is a small device typically made of silicone or plastic that fits over the nostrils or inside the nasal passages. According to Dr Krishna, it works by physically widening the nostrils, similar to a nose strip, but also exerts pressure on specific points in the nose that may help improve airflow. “Some nose clips are designed with magnetic components, which are believed to enhance breathing by stimulating nerve endings,” said Dr Krishna.

Nose strips are generally effective for individuals who snore due to nasal congestion or restricted nasal airflow. On the other hand, nose clips may offer additional benefits by providing more direct support to the nostrils and possibly stimulating nerve endings, which might make them more effective for some people. “However, the efficacy varies among individuals, and neither device is guaranteed to work for everyone,” said Dr Krishna.
Dr Sheetal Radia, consultant otorhinolaryngology and head and neck oncosurgery, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road added that nose clips gently pinch the nose to promote better airflow and avoid certain vibrations that can cause snoring. “Similarly, nose strips are adhesive strips that help in opening nasal passage for better breathing. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer on the effectiveness of these products. One can either use nose clips or nose strips according to their preferences,” said Dr Radia.
Nose strips and clips can provide temporary relief by improving nasal airflow, but they may not address the underlying cause of snoring.
For long-term control of snoring, it’s essential to identify and treat the root cause. Weight management, avoiding alcohol before bed, sleeping on your side, and seeking medical advice for issues like sleep apnea are more sustainable strategies, said Dr Krishna. “While nose strips and clips can be helpful, they are generally considered short-term solutions. It’s important to consult a healthcare provider to explore more permanent options and ensure that snoring is not a symptom of a more serious condition like sleep apnea,” said Dr Krishna.
