It is rich in minerals, vitamins A, D, iron, insoluble fibre, and is also known to lower blood sugar levels, boost testosterone, and increase milk production in breastfeeding women. Can you guess what we are talking about? Okay, let us give you another clue — this wonder herb is also used in cooking and has a slightly bitter aftertaste. This one was easy, wasn’t it? And yes, we are indeed talking about fenugreek (or methi) and its multifaceted benefits — something that has even made Malaika Arora a fan. But apart from the above-listed benefits, did you know that it can also help you lose weight? Worry not, as that’s exactly what we are here to talk about today.

“Fenugreek is a unique herb that has long been used in alternative medicine. Fenugreek seeds, commonly known as methi dana, are small yellow seeds packed in nutrients. These seeds have been widely used for centuries for their therapeutic and medicinal properties — not only in India, but several Asian and European nations,” said Sameena Ansari – Senior Dietitian and Nutritionist, CARE Hospitals, Hi-Tec City, Hyderabad.

But what about its weight loss effects?

According to Ansari, being rich in insoluble fibre, the seeds aid in improving digestion, keeping you satiated, boosting metabolism and flushing out toxins from the body. “It is also great for controlling blood sugar levels as it consists of a 4-hydroxy isoleucine compound which increases insulin secretion in the body. This leads to a healthy metabolism that is linked to weight loss. Further, it also helps in lowering triglycerides, cholesterol, and LDL levels in the blood, which further help in cutting down excess weight,” she told indianexpress.com.

Adding, Ushakiran Sisodia, Head, Diet and Nutrition, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital told indianexpress.com that a few studies conducted on overweight individuals have proved reduction in hunger and increased feeling of fullness, leading to lower blood sugar levels and some weight loss after drinking fenugreek seed mixed water prior to breakfast. “However, more research is needed to confirm these findings, determine the optimal dosage and duration of use, and explore other potential health benefits such as reducing inflammation, improving blood sugar control, and boosting digestive health,” she said.

Other health benefits of fenugreek seeds

Apart from weight loss, there are many other health benefits associated with this superfood seed. “Fenugreek seeds has shown to be anti-carcinogenic. Research has shown that they hinder the growth of cancer cells, and being rich in antioxidants, help in removing free radicals present in the body, thereby preventing mutation induced cancer. With 4-hydroxy isoleucine compound, it makes fenugreek seeds anti-inflammatory which helps build better immunity. It is great to relieve pain, especially period cramp and are also used to boost hair growth,” shared Ansari.

Things to keep in mind

However, it is important to note that fenugreek seeds are not a magic solution for weight loss and should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise for best results. “I suggest incorporating functional foods into your diet and acknowledging the power of natural remedies. However, it’s important to remember that other functional foods may be helpful in your weight loss journey but are not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Focus on nourishing your body with whole, nutrient-dense foods, staying active, and getting enough rest to support your overall health and well-being,” Ushakiran pointed out.

Concluding, Ansari said that despite being loaded with so many health benefits, one should not forget that anything used in excess can be harmful. “As such, excessive use of methi seeds can lead to stomach upset, bloating, hypoglycaemia and liver toxicity (if used in large quantities). There are some people who might be allergic to the seeds so before consuming the seeds, you should get yourself tested for allergies against the seed. Overall, fenugreek seeds are superfoods and have great health benefits, provided they are used in moderation”.
