When the weather turns tricky, our throats are the first to complain. However, it is best to not wait for things to get worse. Celebrity nutritionist Ryan Fernando, with an illustrious client roster including big names like Virat Kohli and Shahid Kapoor, recently took to Instagram to share 3 hacks that keep his immunity sharp during sickness.

“Frequent colds, and throat irritation at the slightest weather change — I never wait for things to get worse. Here are 3 things I do:

Vitamin C intake: Guava is one of the best natural sources, and I eat this regularly. But the moment I feel low, I add a liposomal vitamin C capsule, which is a more absorbable form. This absorbs faster and is also gentle on the stomach.

Salt water gargles: Basic, but incredible effective. I do it in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, and definitely in the night without fail. Warm water soothes the throat, and salt helps kill virus, clear mucus and reduce swelling and flushes germs from the throat.

Kadha: Simple, homemade herbal infusion first thing in the morning. It boosts my immune system,” he mentioned in the caption of his social media post.

When someone gets sick, especially with a common cold or sore throat, many simple home remedies are often suggested. Dr. Pooja Pillai, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore shared that while these remedies do have some benefits, but they are not cures.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known to support the immune system. Taking more vitamin C does not prevent you from catching a cold, but it may help reduce the severity and length of the illness. It works by supporting the body’s natural defense system and helping repair tissues. Fresh fruits like oranges, lemons, and amla are good sources.

Salt water gargle

Saltwater gargles are another easy remedy. Gargling with warm salt water can soothe a sore throat, reduce swelling, and wash away mucus or bacteria. The salt helps draw out excess fluid from inflamed throat tissues, which gives relief from irritation and pain. Doing these two to three times a day can be effective.

Kadha

Kadha, a traditional herbal drink made with ingredients like ginger, tulsi, black pepper, and honey, can also help. These herbs have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They may ease congestion, reduce cough, and give comfort during a cold. Drinking kadha warm also helps keep the body hydrated.

Apart from these, there are other simple steps to recover faster. “Getting enough rest allows the body to fight the infection. Drinking plenty of fluids like warm water, soups, or herbal teas keeps the throat moist and prevents dehydration. Using steam inhalation can help clear nasal blockage,” said Pillai, adding that eating light, nutritious food also supports healing.

In short, vitamin C, saltwater gargles, and kadha can provide relief and support recovery, but they should be combined with rest, hydration, and healthy food to feel better quickly.
