Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects how the body regulates blood sugar (glucose) levels. It occurs when there are problems with insulin, a hormone that helps control blood sugar. While proper medical intervention is required to manage diabetes, lifestyle changes like managing weight, exercising regularly and making dietary modifications can help manage diabetes. Taking to her Instagram account, nutritionist Lovneet Batra shared, “Remember, diabetes management is a lifelong commitment, and with the right care, diet, and lifestyle choices, you can lead a healthy and fulfilling life”.

Speaking with indianexpress.com, Dr Girish Parmar, Senior Consultant – Endocrinology, Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital said, “There are several foods which can help manage diabetes by improving blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity and heart health. But it’s important to note that none of the foods are to be considered a replacement to the diabetes medication or therapies”.

6 foods that can help manage diabetes levels

Below are six food items shared by Batra that can help manage diabetes levels. They are:

1. Amla: Amla comprises chromium, a mineral that regulates carbohydrate metabolism and is said to make the body more responsive to insulin, further keeping the blood sugar levels in check.

“Amla is rich in fibre and Vitamin C, helping control blood sugar levels. It also promotes pancreas health for increased insulin production,” shared Dr Parmar.

2. Neem leaves: Neem can reduce the glucose uptake through up-regulation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) and inhibition of key intestinal enzymes such as glucosidases.

Dr Parmar said, “Neem improves insulin sensitivity which aids in better glucose control, often consumed as neem juice or tea”.

3. Jamun (Indian Blackberry): Jamun is a fruit that contains a compound called jamboline, which may help regulate blood sugar levels.

“Jamun, a low-glycemic fruit, prevents sudden blood sugar spikes and enhances insulin activity due to its anthocyanin content,” explained Dr Parmar.

4. Cinnamon: Cinnamon is well-known for its ability to lower blood sugar. Studies have found that the spice can mimic the effects of insulin, a hormone that helps remove sugar from the blood.

“Cinnamon can lower fasting blood sugars due to reduced insulin resistance,” he said.

5. Bitter gourd: Bitter gourd is linked to lowering the body’s blood sugar. This is because the bitter melon has properties that act like insulin, which helps bring glucose into the cells for energy.

“Bitter gourd contains anti-diabetic substances like charantin and polypeptide-p, which lower blood glucose levels and mimic insulin,” explained Dr Parmar.

6. Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are a good source of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and lignans. They may help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity.

Agreeing with Batra, Dr Parmar reasserted, “Flax seeds are high in fibre and contain omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) which can help in blood sugar control”.
