Gyms, often perceived as havens for physical well-being, can inadvertently become breeding grounds for certain pathogens. Among these is ringworm, a fungal infection medically termed tinea. Thriving in warm, humid conditions, ringworm are particularly susceptible to transmission in shared gym facilities due to the prevalence of skin-to-surface contact and the presence of moisture.

Ringworm isn’t caused by a worm but rather by fungi that live on the outer layer of the skin. Dr Natasha Vijayendran, a Dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon, explained, “Ringworm spreads through direct contact with the infected skin or indirect contact with shed skin particles.”

Gym equipment, particularly handles and weights, are hotspots where these fungi can reside. Additionally, communal areas such as sauna rooms and benches where towels are shared pose risks due to the humidity and potential for skin contact.

Long-term effects of ringworm 

While ringworm infections typically don’t compromise the immune system’s overall function, repeated infections can lead to skin damage such as thinning, rough patches, and pigmentation changes.

Dr Vijayendran noted, “People with compromised immune systems, such as those with diabetes or vitamin deficiencies, are more susceptible to recurrent infections.”

Therefore, maintaining overall health through proper nutrition, regular bathing habits, and managing conditions like diabetes becomes crucial to preventing recurrent infections.

Protection against ringworm at the gym

Individuals can take proactive measures to minimise the risk of contracting ringworm at the gym. Dr Vijayendran advised, “After your workout, promptly shower and change out of sweaty clothes to prevent prolonged exposure to sweat and moisture, which can exacerbate fungal growth.”

Using antifungal powders on susceptible areas can also provide an added layer of protection. Wiping down gym equipment before and after use with disinfectant wipes helps eliminate sweat and saliva residues that may harbor fungi.

Responsibilities of gym owners and staff

Gym management plays a pivotal role in curbing the spread of ringworm among patrons. “Regular sanitization of equipment throughout the day is essential,” Dr Vijayendran emphasised.

Implementing strict cleaning protocols for communal areas and ensuring that disposable towels or wipes are readily available can further reduce transmission risks. Educational posters about fungal infections and proper hygiene practices can also enhance awareness among gym members.

While the gym is a haven for physical fitness, it can also harbor fungal infections like ringworm if hygiene standards are not maintained. Understanding the transmission routes and taking proactive steps such as regular bathing, using antifungal powders, and sanitizing equipment can significantly mitigate the risk.
