During the summer, we often choose watermelons, litchis, or muskmelons to stay hydrated. However, let’s not overlook the importance of including citrus fruits like oranges in our diet, as they are a quintessential source of vitamin C and offer numerous health benefits. As such, when we spotted Anshula Kapoor enjoying some fresh oranges, we decided to reach out to experts and understand how they are good for the ongoing summer season.

“Hydration. But make it fruity,” shared Anshula on her Instagram Stories.

Karishma Shah, integrative nutritionist and health coach, told indianexpress.com that citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, clementines and satsumas are good sources of vitamin C. “Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps look after your muscles, bones, tendons, arteries and skin. It also plays a part in making sure your immune and nervous systems work properly and helps your body to absorb iron from food,” said Shah.

Oranges are a good source of hydration due to their high water content. “They are made up of about 87 per cent water, which makes them a refreshing and hydrating fruit to consume,” said Dr Santosh Pandey, naturopath, and acupuncturist, Rejua Energy Centre, Mumbai.

“Staying hydrated is important for overall health and well-being. Water is essential for various bodily functions, including maintaining body temperature, lubricating joints, transporting nutrients, and aiding in digestion. While drinking plain water is the most effective way to stay hydrated, consuming hydrating foods like oranges can also contribute to your overall fluid intake,” said Dr Pandey.

In addition to water, oranges also provide essential nutrients that support hydration. “They are rich in electrolytes like potassium, which helps balance fluid levels in the body. Oranges also contain vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that supports immune function and collagen synthesis,” said Dr Pandey.

When it comes to hydration, it’s important to note that while oranges can contribute to your fluid intake, they should not be relied upon as the sole source of hydration, experts urge. “Drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day is still crucial for maintaining optimal hydration levels. Additionally, individual hydration needs can vary based on factors such as activity level, climate, and personal health conditions,” said Dr Pandey.

*Peel and slice 2 oranges and 3 carrots and mix with salad greens, avocado, and olive oil to make a tangy carrot, orange, and avocado salad. Or add orange segments to a fruit salad and top with yoghurt and seeds. “Don’t forget that one small glass of orange juice (150ml) also counts as one of your fresh fruit servings of the day,” said Shah.
