Can yoga asanas help manage hormone imbalances?

Women often suffer from hormonal imbalances which can lead to issues such as irregular periods, PCOS, thyroid, etc. While Yoga cannot medicinally treat these conditions, it can definitely help manage them and the symptoms, said celebrity yoga teacher, Anshuka Parwani

Hormonal imbalance in the body can lead to various concerns like thyroid, PCOS issues among others. While proper medical diagnosis is required to treat these conditions, lifestyle, and dietary changes can also significantly help in managing them. Certain yoga asanas can specifically be helpful in managing hormonal imbalances. Taking to Instagram, celebrity yoga teacher, Anshuka Parwani wrote, “Ladies practicing yoga can help you balance your hormones”.

She added, “Women often suffer from hormonal imbalances which can lead to issues such as irregular periods, PCOS, thyroid, etc. While Yoga cannot medicinally treat these conditions, it can definitely help manage them and the symptoms”.

Explaining how some asanas can help manage your hormone levels, Parwani explained yoga can:

-Stimulate the endocrine system; ensuring consistent production and distribution of hormones in the body
-Reduce high stress levels; which is one of the main reasons for hormonal imbalance
-Start practicing these daily and see the difference!

The five asanas shared by Parwani are:

1. Uttanasana/ Forward fold
2. Butterfly pose/ Baddha konasana
3. Bridge pose/setu bandhasana
4. Half fish pose/ Ardh matsyendrasana
5. Crocodile pose/ Makrasana

She advised that one should start practicing these asanas for 15 seconds and gradually build up to 2 minutes.

Speaking with indianexpress.com, Dr Mickey Mehta, holistic health guru said that every yoga posture works on the digestive system, endocrine system, nervous system, faculties of all senses, and musculoskeletal system. “Typically these 5 yoga asanas are selected for increasing hormonal activity and restoring and repairing the balance of its malfunction,” said Dr Mehta.

Explaining how yoga asanas can help balance hormone levels, Dr Mehta gave the example of uttanasana and shared, “Each time we bend downwards and breathe out and squeeze our organs, certain toxins ooze out from the organ, and most importantly we stimulate our endocrine system which triggers hormones to regulate them and balance them out. This also works on your core. Whenever the core is squeezed the hormone stimulation happens.”

Things to keep in mind

Dr Mehta shares a few things to keep in mind when performing these yoga asanas. They are:

– Make sure you don’t hold the postures to the point of discomfort
– Warm up very well before you even endeavor to get into the posture and
– Keep your mind in the present for the best results
– Start slow and later build-up
