The festival of Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. One of its most vibrant traditions is the Dahi Handi competition, especially popular in Maharashtra, where groups of young men and women form human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd, butter, and other goodies, reenacting Krishna’s playful childhood habit of stealing butter. During Janmashtami fasting, no grains should be consumed until the fast is broken the next day after sunrise, and all rules of Ekadashi fasting are to be followed.
This year, according to the Dharma Shastra, Parana (breaking the fast) should be performed after 9:34 PM on August 16, when the Ashtami Tithi ends, or after sunrise at 5:59 AM on August 17, following Deva Puja, Visarjan, and related rituals.
In modern tradition, however, many devotees perform Parana after 12:43 AM on August 16, immediately after Nishita (Hindu midnight).
