A fit lifestyle is like a second skin for Akshay Kumar. But the Sky Force actor admits to having a “weakness.” Opening up about the same in an interaction with actor Anupam Kher from 2020, he said, “Meetha (is my weakness). Anything and everything. I really love sweets. I am fond of eating sweets after meals. For an action film, I may leave it for a few days, but then I eat. Bahut badi problem hai (I have a huge issue with sweet).”
However, even if sugar tastes delicious to your taste buds, experts stress watching out for refined and processed sugar consumption as it can lead to “numerous health issues.”
Dr Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology, Zandra Healthcare and co-founder of Rang De Neela Initiative, said that sugar cravings are often rooted in biology and psychology. “Biologically, sugar stimulates dopamine release, giving a ‘feel-good’ sensation. Over time, this can become habit-forming, leading to cravings,” said Dr Kovil, adding that sugar is the biggest addiction in the world.
High sugar intake has been linked to increased inflammation in the body. “Sugar produces energy that is not sustained for longer and can spoil appetite. While it may be hard to cut down sugar totally, you must ensure that you have adequate protein and complex carbohydrates in the diet as well for proper energy and blood glucose regulation,” said clinical dietitian Garima Goyal.
Shruti K Bhardwaj, chief dietician at Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad, said quitting or limiting sugar can lead to several positive changes in your body. “Initially, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, but over time, your energy levels stabilise, and mood swings diminish. Your metabolism improves, reducing the risk of obesity and related health issues,” said Bhardwaj.
A diet with reduced sugar intake and sweets supports better dental health, preventing cavities and gum disease. Moreover, Bhardwaj explained that cutting sugar can enhance heart health by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. “Insulin sensitivity improves, reducing the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes,” said Bhardwaj.
Cutting sugar does not mean replacing it with jaggery or artificial sweeteners. “Sugar and jaggery both have equal calories. One must avoid sweets keeping in mind hidden sugar content,” said Bhardwaj.
