Actor and comic Sumukhi Suresh recently undertook a 14-day no sugar challenge and documented the good, bad and ugly in a video snippet on her Instagram. “Sugar is like your ex. When you are busy, you say, you are done. But after 10 pm, you would want to call your ex. That’s when the sugar cravings kick in,” Sumukhi, 37, said.

During the challenge, she also visited a supermarket to shop for no-sugar products while setting herself a squats or burpees challenge to compensate for giving in to any sugar cravings during the day. Halfway through the challenge, she admitted, “I have reduced cravings. I can taste things. Not everything tastes like sugar. Like I didn’t know coffee tasted so good,” shared Sumukhi.

On the last day of the challenge, she said, “I wake up on time. I exercise much better. It’s no longer sugar cravings. It’s just that I am free from sugar wants,” shared Sumukhi.

As Sumukhi pointed out, Dr Rajiv Kovil, head of diabetology at Zandra Healthcare and co-founder of Rang De Neela Initiative, called sugar the biggest addiction in the world. “Quitting sugar for two weeks can bring noticeable changes to your body and overall health,” said Dr Kovil.

Dr Kovil emphasised that quitting sugar may feel challenging at first, but within two weeks, the health benefits become clear.

Benefits

Stabilised blood sugar levels: Within days, your blood sugar stabilises, reducing energy crashes and sugar cravings. Insulin spikes decrease, promoting fat burn and better energy levels.

Improved energy and mood: Without sugar highs and lows, your energy remains stable, and mood swings reduce. Many people report feeling more alert and focused.

Withdrawal symptoms: Initially, you may experience headaches, fatigue, or irritability as your body adjusts, but this usually subsides within a few days.

Weight loss: Without excess sugar, your body burns more fat, especially around the abdomen. You’ll also lose water retention, reducing bloating.

Improved gut health: Reduced sugar intake supports a healthier gut microbiome, reducing bloating and digestive discomfort.

Dr Kovil said that sustaining it for a long time is challenging because the ghrelin hormone becomes active, which increases cravings. “Hence, many strict dietary interventions do not last beyond 15 to 20 weeks,” said Dr Kovil.
