Coffee is one of the world’s most beloved beverages. Known for its rich aroma and stimulating effect, it’s a daily ritual for many, providing a comforting boost of energy and a moment of warmth and relaxation. And there’s not one but numerous types of coffee, each with its unique flavours, preparations, and brewing methods.

As such, on the occasion of International Coffee Day, Taste Atlas — an experiential travel online guide for traditional food that collates authentic recipes, food critic reviews, and research articles about popular ingredients and dishes — released a list of the most popular coffee drinks across the world.

The first position is grabbed by espresso, which is both the name of a coffee beverage and the method of brewing coffee that originated in Italy. “Nowadays it is prepared worldwide with the espresso machine – invented in Turin in 1884 by Angelo Moriondo – by forcing a small amount of hot water under high pressure through finely ground coffee beans,” Taste Atlas noted.

It is followed by the widely popular cappuccino, which is an Italian coffee made with espresso and steam-foamed milk. “It is believed that it developed from kapuziner—a coffee-based beverage that was enjoyed in Austrian coffee houses in the 18th century.”

The third spot is taken by cortado, which is a Spanish beverage made by pouring a small amount of espresso into a small glass cup, and then cutting it with an equal amount of steamed milk in order to neutralise the bitterness. “The ratio of espresso to milk gives a unique flavour where the robustness of the coffee comes through, while the finish is velvety due to steamed milk. Cortado is typically consumed in coffee bars as it is not intended to be taken on the go,” the guide noted.

A popular Indian speciality, South Indian coffee or Indian filter coffee, also finds a mention in the list as it grabbed the 20th spot. Describing the same, Taste Atlas wrote, “Indian filter coffee is a preparation technique in which coffee is brewed with the use of an Indian coffee filter. This filter consists of two chambers—the upper one with a perforated bottom used to hold ground coffee and the bottom one in which brewed coffee is slowly dripped.”

It said that this brewing technique results in a richly-flavoured, full-bodied coffee that is usually mixed with milk and sweetened with sugar. “It is traditionally served in a tumbler with an accompanying saucer (davara). Sometimes, the combination of coffee and warm milk is continuously poured from one vessel to another until it is aerated and becomes frothy.”
