This is what happens when you chew cloves everyday

“Depending on who you speak to, the benefits extend to the digestive system, inflammation and even longevity!” content creator Dr Rupy Aujla states.

Commonly used as an aromatic spice in Indian cooking, cloves have been hailed for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. As a result, these flower buds offer several health benefits and are recommended for intake regularly.

British Indian medical professional, Dr Rupy Aujla mentions how his relatives have always told him “about the benefits of chewing cloves every day”. In a reel, he mentions the several benefits of chewing cloves every day, including their ability to effectively cure inflammation, lower blood pressure, and maintain oral health.

“Depending on who you speak to, the benefits extend to the digestive system, inflammation, and even longevity!” he exclaims.

Health benefits of chewing cloves

Dr Jagadish J Hiremath, medical director at Aasra Super Speciality Hospital, agrees with Dr Aujla, adding that cloves are rich in eugenol, a potent antimicrobial agent that helps combat oral pathogens responsible for diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. “Studies suggest that eugenol is effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which underscores its role in enhancing oral hygiene and health,” he explains.

Beyond their antimicrobial properties, he says, cloves are lauded for their high antioxidant content. Antioxidants in cloves, such as flavonoids and isoflavones, help neutralise free radicals, thereby preventing cellular damage and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.

The anti-inflammatory effects of cloves are mediated through the inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, Dr Hiremath remarks, which can reduce inflammation throughout the body. This is particularly beneficial for managing conditions like arthritis and other inflammatory disorders.

Effectiveness of cloves in alleviating toothache and managing gum diseases

According to Dr Hiremath chewing cloves can help reduce toothache and gum diseases in the following ways:

*Analgesic properties: The eugenol found in cloves is not only an antimicrobial agent but also a natural analgesic and anesthetic, commonly used in dental care for temporary relief of toothache pain. Its effectiveness in reducing dental pain is well-documented in dental literature.

*Gum health: By reducing inflammation and bacterial growth, cloves can contribute to healthier gums, preventing or slowing the progression of gum diseases. Regular use of clove-based mouthwashes or oils can be particularly effective in maintaining oral health.

Cloves and digestive health

Dr Aujla stresses the importance of chewing cloves for optimum digestive health. Dr Hiremath elaborates on what factors help cloves do so:

*Digestive enzyme stimulation: Cloves stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes, which improves digestion and reduces symptoms of gastrointestinal distress such as bloating, gas, and indigestion.

*Anti-inflammatory effects on the GI tract: The anti-inflammatory properties of cloves can help soothe the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, reducing inflammation-related digestive issues.

Risks linked to frequent consumption of cloves

While eugenol is beneficial, Dr Hiremath warns that excessive consumption can lead to liver damage, particularly in individuals with pre-existing liver conditions. The therapeutic index (the range between an effective dose and a harmful one) for eugenol is narrow, and caution is advised.

“Cloves can also interact with anticoagulant medications due to their blood-thinning properties. Patients taking such medications should consult healthcare providers before incorporating cloves into their regimen,” he asserts.

Guidelines for incorporating cloves in daily diets

“Using a small quantity, such as one to two cloves per day, can be beneficial,” he confirms.  Cloves can be integrated into diets by adding them to teas, baked goods, or meals for flavour and health benefits.

Pregnant women, individuals with liver disease, and those on blood-thinning medication should use cloves cautiously and under medical advice. Children should also use cloves under supervision to avoid potential adverse effects.
