Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s fitness game is unmatched. A self-proclaimed mindful yogi and wellness influencer, Shetty’s social media is peppered with posts and videos of her stretching her way to good health. In a recent Instagram video, she shared a glimpse of her performing a complicated spinal exercise. “The Spinal Wave Flow is a technique designed to release blockages in the spine and trigger a spinal wave. The goal of this movement is to create relief in the nervous system and encourage the body to release stressors. It also serves as a reminder that, like waves, nothing in life is permanent. Be present in the moment, rise like a wave, but also flow like water,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

Certified fitness instructor and yoga expert Manushreya Sharma shared her take on how this exercise stands to benefit you.
Living a fast-paced life, we often forget to take care of our spine. We slouch and adopt poor postures, and never take enough care of our spinal health. So spinal waves help us heal our spines as it is a really important part of our nervous system regulation.
She added that when we go through emotional challenges, we store pain in our physical body– the hips and spine are places where we store our emotional blockages. Spinal waves also help heal both our physical and emotional bodies.
For starters, Sharma suggested against performing this exercise if you have any spinal injury or surgery. In all other cases, you can and should practice spinal movements daily to live a healthy and long life.
“It’s important to do such stretchings right when you wake up because the body needs to get going before starting the day. Having said that, you can practice it anytime but ensure a meal gap of 2 hours before and after practicing any yoga postures,” she added.
