A fortnight ago, on New Year’s Eve, Queen Margrethe II declared her abdication, passing the throne to Frederik, making Mary the new Queen of Denmark—the first Australian-born woman in history to ascend to the sovereign role of a nation.
Waving in response to the canon salute from the crowds, King Frederik and Queen Mary epitomised regal elegance: King Frederik was adorned in regal regalia with a uniform embellished with medallions and a sash, while Queen Mary of Denmark wore a draped long-sleeved white dress designed by Søren Le Schmidt, a renowned Danish designer.
“I was very honoured, happy, proud, and not least grateful to be asked to design this particular dress,” Le Schmidt told Vogue Scandinavia. “The first dress that Queen Mary would wear under her new title as Queen—a dress for the history books—means a great deal. I am very moved.”

The gown epitomised the style that Mary had honed during her tenure as Crown Princess and now seeks to carry forward and enhance as Queen. Featuring long sleeves and a distinct waist belt draped around the neck and over the shoulder, it exuded maturity yet radiated a bright aura—a clear hint at the forthcoming reign. The subtle bridal touch was intentional. Birgit Hallstein, the seamstress behind the dress, had previously crafted Mary’s Uffe Franke dress for her wedding to Frederik in 2004, according to Vogue Australia.
Despite the absence of royal crowns or tiaras, Queen Mary’s jewellery selection continued the theme from her time as the Crown Princess. She chose items from her iconic ruby set, creating a dazzling contrast against the white dress.
Adorning her rubies and diamonds, Mary affixed an “ordensportrættet” to her shoulder—a framed portrait of Queen Margrethe II, encircled by pearls and diamond Maltese crosses. This ordensportrættet had once been worn by Margrethe herself, featuring her father’s portrait.
The Order of the Elephant, or the “Elefantorden“, stands as Denmark’s most esteemed order of chivalry. With Frederik’s ascent to the throne, he not only assumes the title of King of Denmark but also becomes the sovereign of this distinguished order. A keen examination of his coronation attire, a ceremonial military uniform, reveals the elephant pin on his right lapel, its corresponding eight-point silver star adorning the left side of his chest, and the pale blue silk moiré sash, symbolising his affiliation with the order.
