The West Bengal Forest Department, in collaboration with the North Bengal Animals Park authorities is all set to unveil the state’s first lion safari in Siliguri. According to officials, a pair of female lions hailing from the Alipur Zoo in Kolkata with another pair from Tripura are to arrive in the first week of January next year.

Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat

Located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat, the Gir National Park is the only place in the world where these majestic creatures roam freely in their natural habitat. Lion safaris here provide a chance to wildlife lovers to witness the royal predators in the backdrop of dry deciduous forests and scrublands. The park is a biodiversity hotspot with several other creatures living together in the wide expanse of 1,412 square kilometres, including leopards, deer, antelopes, and a myriad of bird species. The park is open from mid-October to mid-June, with the peak tourist season from December to March.

Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat

An extension of Gir National Park, Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary is another hotspot for lion safaris. The sanctuary is also home to diverse species, including leopards, spotted deer, sambar deer, nilgai, and various bird species. The sanctuary is open from mid-October to mid-June, with the winter months (December to March) being optimal for wildlife sightings.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Maharashtra

Sanjay Gandhi National Park has been a sanctuary of serenity and a custodian of India’s natural heritage since its inception in 1975. One of its cherished attractions, the lion safari, took a temporary hiatus last year due to the ailing health of its ageing lions. Now, a pair of lions from Gujarat, as part of a collaborative exchange initiative, are set to make the park their new home. The park hosts a variety of species, including spotted deer, sambar deer, macaques, langurs, and many bird species. It is open throughout the year with the winter months (October to March), providing pleasant weather for wildlife sightings.
