Indian travellers who dream of seeing Scandinavian landscapes—such as snowy hills, frozen lakes, pine valleys, and fresh mountain air—can find similar sights in popular tourist destinations like the Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh and in Narkanda and the Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh. These places bear a striking resemblance to Norway, often earning them the moniker “Norway of India.” Each spot is unique in its own way, but all share a magical winter beauty that reminds visitors of Northern Europe.
Tucked away in the northeastern corner of India, Dibang Valley is one of the least explored districts of the country—and that untouched quality is precisely why it reminds travellers of Norway’s northern wilderness.
What to see here: Key attractions include Anini’s sweeping views, Mathun Valley’s landscapes and Mipi village. Travellers can also explore the Idu Mishmi culture and spot rare wildlife, such as takins and red pandas.
Just a few hours from Shimla, Narkanda has emerged as one of India’s most accessible “Norway-like” destinations. Its picturesque slopes, dense fir forests, and heavy snowfall give it a postcard-perfect winter appearance.
What to see here: Must-visits include Hatu Peak, Tani Jubbar Lake. The nearby orchard village of Thanedar and Narkanda’s markets add to its appeal.
Among all Indian destinations, the Lahaul Valley—especially Sissu, Keylong, Gondhla, and Tandi—is most frequently labelled the “Norway of India.” After the opening of the Atal Tunnel, its snow-covered landscapes became accessible year-round, intensifying the comparison.
What to see here: Sissu waterfall and lake, Keylong’s monasteries, the historic Gondhla Fort and the Tandi river confluence are key highlights. The approach to the Atal Tunnel also provides a view of snow corridors.
