Having started back in 2013, Divyavani Sanskrit Radio, the world’s first 24/7 Sanskrit radio, marks its tenth anniversary this year. Its founder Professor Sampadananda Mishra, a PhD (in Sanskrit from Utkal University Bhubaneswar and Pondicherry Central University) has been an advocate of the language and wanted to popularise the ancient language not just in India but across the globe. “I want Sanskrit accessible to all. In every step, I am fuelled by the deep-seated gratitude that has become the heartbeat of my journey, propelling me forward in my unwavering commitment to the cause,” expressed Mishra in an interaction with indianexpress.com.
Notably, the radio listeners have been tuning in from more than 160 countries. “Many listeners share that they tune in while commuting, utilising the time to learn Sanskrit on the go. Parents have expressed joy in witnessing their children pick up Sanskrit through the engaging content provided by Divyavani,” mentioned Mishra.
According to him, Sanskrit is a unique language with “unparalleled potential to elevate human consciousness”. “Sanskrit becomes a powerful tool for understanding our civilisational roots. Introducing Sanskrit to the children of Bharat (India) from their early years can foster a profound sense of connection with our rich heritage. Beyond cultural ties, the practical value of learning Sanskrit becomes evident in its systematic structure and transparent sound system. This language uniquely contributes to the development of cognitive abilities such as concentration, memory, logical thinking, original thought power, and creativity,” described Mishra. He added that the transformative potential of Sanskrit, both in individual minds and in shaping our societal consciousness, underscores its significance as a language worth preserving and promoting.

Divyavani Sanskrit Radio offers a diverse array of programs encompassing various facets of Sanskrit culture and heritage. This includes beginning the day with devotional prayers and mantras. It caters to audiences of all ages, particularly children, through captivating stories. “The musical tapestry of Divyavani includes a wide range of songs, complemented by insightful speeches, informative news items, soulful poetry recitals, engaging plays, and lighthearted jokes and humorous stories,” explained Mishra.
Moreover, the radio initiative extends beyond mere entertainment. Mishra said that it includes educational components such as classroom teaching programs, providing a “comprehensive platform for learning and appreciation”. “During specific festivals, Divyavani Sanskrit Radio curates special programs, adding a festive touch to its regular lineup. For instance, during Navratri, listeners can immerse themselves in Chandi Patha, while Gita Jayanti features the recitation of the entire Bhagavad Gita. Similarly, Ram Navmi brings forth the Ramayana Parayana, creating a dynamic and culturally rich listening experience for the audience,” shared Mishra.
The solo endeavour, meticulously managed by Mishra encompasses audio recording and conversion to uploading, scheduling, and promotion through social media. “While the workload is substantial, the passion for promoting Sanskrit and the satisfaction derived from the positive impact on listeners drive me to continue this solitary yet rewarding journey,” he expressed.

While managing the entire program single-handedly has presented its challenges, he believes that the commitment to the cause remains steadfast.
“I believe that the transformative power of Sanskrit can significantly impact the lives of the younger generation, fostering a deep connection with our cultural heritage. As we continue on this journey, I welcome suggestions, feedback, and collaboration from all quarters. Together, let us contribute to the revitalisation of Sanskrit and its invaluable place in our collective consciousness,” he said.
