Get ready to embark on a unique journey through the heart of Kolkata, as a Puja Special Tram graces the city. This tram, designed in honour of Kolkata’s rich history — the UNESCO Heritage Tag awarded to Durga Puja, and the 150-year legacy of Kolkata’s tramways — promises to be a sight to behold.

The route of this special tram winds its way from Tollygunge to Ballygunge, perfectly timed to coincide with Kolkata’s most significant month of celebration – Durga Puja. As it traverses the Tollygunge route, it takes you through the historic neighborhoods and grand Puja pandals that define the essence of this city.

Collaborating in this effort are the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC), Asian Paints, and XXL Collective.

Amit Syngle, CEO and MD of Asian Paints Limited, told indianexpress.com that they’ve drawn inspiration from native elements of West Bengal, such as the Bengal Tiger, Tram, Howrah Bridge, and Baul, to transform the tram into a symbol of art and celebration. “We believe in making art accessible for all and we are sure that this tram-beautification initiative will also add back to the legacy of Bengal in an extremely meaningful way.”

Kolkata’s iconic trams, which have been weaving through the city since 1873, are not just a mode of transportation but a symbol of the city’s history and charm. This Puja Special Tram aims to transform your ride from a mere commute to a cultural journey that pays homage to the city’s rich heritage.

Arjun Bahl, founder of XXL Collective, said that through this collaboration, they have turned a simple tram ride into a cultural experience, reimagining the possibilities of public spaces in the city. “As we pay homage to the past and embrace the future, we aspire for Kolkata to become a canvas where art and culture thrive, bringing this experience closer to every resident.”

Inside the tram

The first bogie’s exteriors pay homage to ‘Kumartuli,’ the traditional potters’ quarters in North Kolkata, where Durga idols are sculpted.

It also showcases ‘Sindoor Khela’ and ‘Dhunuchi’ dances, encapsulating the essence of Durga Puja. Inside, you’ll find puja decor with cane installations, Alpona art, and a museum-style visual narrative. Interactive elements and QR codes engage visitors with the stories of the people behind the Durga Puja festivities.

The second bogie transports passengers to a heritage Kolkata location, mirroring the city’s luxurious appeal.

The exteriors draw inspiration from West Bengal’s culture and landmarks, featuring augmented reality elements. The artwork reflects the dramatic elements of famous puja symbols, capturing the ever-evolving spirit of celebration in the state.

The special tram will run from Durga Puja to the new year.
