Weather update: IMD issues ‘red alert’ for Andhra Pradesh, flash flood warning for Odisha

The weather office has issued an advisory for localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses in the listed regions with expected damage to kutcha roads.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts for several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and West Bengal, until September 12. Warnings of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms prevail in coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Odisha as IMD has extended the ‘red alert’ for the area.

Adjoining regions of Telangana, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have been issued an ‘orange alert’ and are also expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall and isolated heavy rainfall in certain regions.

The Vijayawada city is experiencing flooding in some regions due to a third breach in the Budameru Rivulet. The state has deployed 50 teams from the NDRF and SDRF who are actively engaged in relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Meanwhile, the Met Department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea along the West Bengal-Odisha coast until Tuesday (September 11) due to rough sea conditions and reduction of visibility over the sea area over the Northwest and adjoining Northeast and Central Bay of Bengal.

Additionally, the weather agency has also issued flash flood warnings for Odisha’s Baragarh, Bauda, Ganjam, Jagatsinghapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Kendraparha, Khordha, Koraput, Nayagarh, Puri, and Rayagarha districts.

Where Himachal breathes a sigh of relief from heavy rainfall and ongoing road repairs, IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Uttarakhand predicting moderate to heavy rainfall until September 11.

Meanwhile, the Met Office stated that a circulation system is currently affecting north-eastern Rajasthan and its surrounding areas, which will prolong monsoon rainfall in most parts of eastern Rajasthan until the end of the week and has extended the ‘yellow alert’ for Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, and Jaipur divisions.
