Weather Update: North India continues to face heavy rainfall; Amarnath Yatra remains suspended from Jammu

At least six people reportedly died in Uttarakhand amid heavy rainfall on Sunday. The authorities in the hill state have sounded a red alert and issued warnings to all districts until July 13.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light/moderate fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Western Himalayan Region, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on Monday (July 10). Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over western Madhya Pradesh, as per the latest forecast by the IMD.

Incessant rainfall over the weekend brought north India to its knees, with rivers in spate, landslides in the mountains, waterlogging in the plains, and several dead in rain-related incidents. As per news agency PTI, at least six people died in Uttarakhand amid heavy rainfall on Sunday. The authorities in the hill state have sounded a red alert and issued warnings to all districts until July 13 as the state witnessed several instances of landslides and road blockages. The water level has also risen in all major rivers, including the Ganga, amid a forecast of more heavy showers in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra remained suspended from Jammu for the third consecutive day on Monday due to damage to a section of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway in Ramban, officials told PTI. The yatra was suspended on Friday following widespread rain and landslides.

The Panchvaktra bridge in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi collapsed as heavy rains in the state continued to batter almost all districts, triggering landslides and flash floods in various regions, ANI reported.

In Madhya Pradesh, four people were trapped in the Narmada river near Gopalpur Village in Jabalpur, according to an official statement. The district administration has said a rescue operation was underway and a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team was also present at the spot.

Rainfall also shattered records in both Delhi and Chandigarh, with waterlogging across the two cities.

Weather forecast for today:

West India

The weather department has predicted light/moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over Goa, ghat areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat during next the next two days. The downpour is likely to decrease thereafter.

Northwest India

As per the IMD, moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over western Himalayan Region. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi are also likely to witness widespread rains with the possibility of very heavy rainfall over isolated pockets.

East and adjoining Northeast India

For the next 5 days, the IMD predicted fairly widespread to widespread moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur. Meanwhile, Odisha will likely witness isolated heavy rainfall during the next five days.

Rainfall is also predicted over Jharkhand during July 10-12; Andaman & Nicobar Islands on July 10 and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Bihar during July 11-13.

Central India

The region is expected to receive light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall during the coming five days.  Meanwhile, western Madhya Pradesh is likely to get heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 10.

South India

As per the Met department, light/moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over coastal Karnataka and Kerala during the next five days.

Rainfall observations:

In 9 days, Mumbai gets over 50 % average rain for July

As Mumbai continue to experience heavy rain, the IMD said that the city has already received more than 50 per cent of the average monthly quota for July within just nine days of this month.

According to the figures, the Santacruz observatory has recorded 494 mm of rainfall so far, which is 57 per cent of 855.7 mm, which is the required quota of average rain in July.

Despite delayed monsoon onset, Gujarat receives 40 per cent rain so far

Though the southwest monsoon marked its onset on June 25, nearly 10 days later than its normal onset, the state has recorded a higher rainfall compared to the previous year. A fortnight into the onset of the Southwest monsoon, Gujarat received an average 40 per cent rainfall with the Kutch region alone receiving 104 per cent of the season’s share.

Gujarat recorded higher rainfall due to Cyclone Biparjoy followed by an active monsoon. The state’s average last year as on this day was 27.69 per cent or 235.44 mm.

Amid heavy rains, 17 trains cancelled, 12 diverted: Northern Railway

The Northern Railway has cancelled around 17 trains and diverted around 12 others as heavy rains pounded several parts of the region.

In a statement, a Northern Railway spokesperson said traffic has been suspended at four locations due to waterlogging. These include sections between Noganwan (Ambala)-New Morinda, between Nangal Dam and Anandpur Sahib and between Kiratpur Sahib and Bharatgarh.

Delhi downpour: 200+ waterlogging complaints received, two roads cave in

Over 200 complaints of waterlogging and two complaints of road cave-ins, including at Rohini Sector 22-23, were reported as rain pelted Delhi for the second day in a row on Sunday.

The city has seen more rain over the weekend than it usually does over the whole of July.

Meanwhile, four people, including two soldiers, died in Jammu and Kashmir amid heavy rain over the weekend. One death was reported in Ladakh. Incessant rainfall had triggered flash floods and landslides in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, but by Sunday afternoon, the weather improved.
