Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse News Highlights (November 25): With the auger machine facing repeated troubles delaying the rescue of 41 labourers trapped for the past 13 days inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Saturday said the operations may resume in the "next 24 to 36 hours" as machines are being placed on a platform on top of the tunnel. Briefing the media on the progress of rescue operations, NDMA member Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain added that the focus was now on vertical drilling to bring out the workers. After the auger machine encountered multiple hurdles and broke inside the rescue pipes while drilling through the rubble, rescuers are now considering switching over to other options such as manual drilling at the Silkyara tunnel, as per PTI reports. The heavy drill machine being used to break through the nearly 60 meters of debris was damaged on Friday and needs to be pulled out entirely, according to an official statement at 8 am this morning. Who are the men inside? Fifteen from Jharkhand, eight from Uttar Pradesh, five each from Odisha and Bihar, three from West Bengal, two each from Uttarakhand and Assam, and one from Himachal Pradesh – the men trapped inside the Uttarkashi tunnel may have come from different states, but what united them was the need to venture out in search of a livelihood. Those working there fall in two salary brackets: Rs 24,000 for skilled workers, pump operators or drillers; and Rs 18,000 for unskilled workers such as labourers or helpers.
