At least 2 persons were killed and 29 others injured on Sunday after an Uttarakhand state roadways bus carrying 42 people lost control and fell into a 70-metre gorge near ITBP gate on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road.

The bus overturned due to brake failure, officials said.

DS Kohli, SHO, Mussoorie police station, said the deceased were identified as 15-year-old Mehak Lakheda and her mother Sudha Lakheda (40), who were residents of Mussoorie.

“The bus had a total of 40 passengers, of which 16 were women, 19 men and 5 children. The injured were sent to local hospitals from where some have been shifted to Dehradun. Out of the total injured, six were discharged after primary treatment,” he said.

A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) reached the spot and started the rescue operations.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief at the loss of lives in the accident and asked officials to make all arrangements for the treatment of the injured.

According to a statement issued by the SDRF, they were informed by the Dehradun Disaster Control Room that the roadways bus overturned from the main road and crashed about 70 metres down.
