From snakes, crocodiles to trimming beard, US deportee from Punjab recalls perilous 'donkey route'

Promised a legal entry into the US, Mandeep Singh's life was at risk after he was made to deal with crocodiles and snakes, trim his beard despite being a Sikh, and having to go without food for days.

Mandeep was part of 112 Indians to be deported by a US military aircraft that landed at the Amritsar airport late on Sunday, the third such batch of Indians to be sent back amid a crackdown by the Donald Trump administration against illegal immigrants.

The deportees' arrived within 24 hours of a US military aircraft bringing back a batch of 116 Indians living illegally in that country.

Instead of a legal entry as promised, Mandeep's travel agent put him on the 'donkey route' – an illegal and risky pathway used by migrants to enter the US. (PTI)

Punjab CM says mass deportation from US eye opener, asks youths not to travel abroad illegally

"The mass deportation from the United States is an eye opener for all of us," Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Sunday as he urged youths to shun the idea of going abroad illegally and work hard in the state to ensure its socio-economic growth.

The deportees alleged that despite paying huge amounts to travel agents, they were made to travel to the US illegally without knowing. They now seek strict action against those agents.

Addressing a gathering at Ghungrali village here during a sports tournament, Mann said, "We are blessed to have taken birth on this sacred land which is the most fertile in the world." Due to the failure of successive governments in the state, youths were forced to migrate to other countries in search of greener pastures, he said.

The chief minister said, "The mass deportation from the US is an eye-opener for all of us and now we should not move abroad illegally, but rather work hard for the socio-economic growth of the state." Mann said the AAP government has already given more than 50,000 government jobs to the youths in Punjab purely based on merit. "This is for the first time in the history of the state that such a large number of government jobs have been given to the youth in three years." (PTI)

PM didn't tell his good friend about country's outrage over handcuffing Indian deportees: Congress

The Congress Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to the US recently, of not conveying to his "good friend" Donald Trump about the outrage over the shackling of Indians being deported from America.

Two US military planes have landed in Amritsar this month so far, deporting Indians as part of the Trump administration's promised crackdown on illegal migration. Another deportation flight from the US is scheduled to arrive in Amritsar on Sunday night.

Many deportees have claimed they were in shackles during the flight.

Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh referred to reports of shackling Indians deported from the United States and said, "It is abundantly clear that the PM did NOT convey to his good friend our country's outrage at the manner in which Indian citizens are being deported from the USA. Only cowards boast of 56-inch chests." (PTI)

2nd US flight in Amritsar, many deportees complain being shackled; third plane on Sunday night

A US military aircraft carrying 116 illegal Indian immigrants landed at Amritsar airport late on Saturday night, with the men among the deportees claiming they were in shackles during the journey and Sikh youths were allegedly without turbans.

The C-17 aircraft, which landed at the airport around 11.35 pm on Saturday, was the second batch of Indians to be deported by the Donald Trump administration as part of its crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Of these 115 deportees, 65 are from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, eight from Gujarat, two each from Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, and one each from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. They were provided food upon reaching Amritsar, much to their reprieve after the exhausting journey.

According to sources, most of the deportees in the second batch were aged between 18 and 30.

A third plane carrying 112 deportees, that include people from Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat, is expected to land at Amritsar airport late on Sunday night, official sources said.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Sunday strongly condemned the US authorities for allegedly not allowing Sikh deportees, who were part of the second batch of illegal Indian immigrants, to wear turbans. (PTI)

Some deportees who landed from US didn’t have turbans, says Punjab cabinet minister; SGPC made last-minute arrangements for siropas

A Punjab cabinet minister and some deportees who landed from the United States in Amritsar on Saturday night have claimed that some of the young men on board the flight didn’t have their turbans, and the Punjab administration had to make last-minute arrangements at the airport.

The second batch of 116 devotees arrived at the Sri Ramdas International Airport a little before midnight yesterday.

Yashpal Singh from Patti, who claimed to have spent Rs 44 lakh to take the “dunkey route” to the US, said, “We were not wearing turbans when we landed at the airport. They had removed our turbans (before the flight). SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) provided us with a siropa, but those were not long enough as these are used to honour someone and not to tie on the head. So I borrowed a cap to cover my head.” Read More

‘I wanted to enter US from Arizona’: Deportee blames agent who made him cross border in state Trump lost

Son of a shopkeeper at Patti in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, Yashpal Singh was likely one of the most informed immigrants on the “donkey route”. He had developed an understanding of US politics, with which he wanted to increase his chances of living the American dream. He said his agent, however, shattered all his dreams.

The deportees who landed at Amritsar airport late on Saturday were mostly those who entered the US just before or soon after President Donald Trump took office. Knowing Trump’s politics, Yashpal wanted to enter the US from the Arizona border. His agent, however, pushed him into the US from the California border.

“I started from Delhi on December 16. The first agent landed me in Nicaragua. Then we somehow reached Mexico, where they kept us waiting for one month. We were aware that Trump was set to become President and he would tighten the norms. So we wanted to enter the US before Trump came to power. But our agent kept us waiting, and we were made to enter the US only on January 24,” he said. Read More

Illegal immigration from Punjab: experts say ‘donkey route’ attracts parents more than their children

Illegal immigration routes have attracted parents in Punjab more than their children, inspired by a few “success stories” of the past, immigration consultants say, noting that the trend was initially more popular in the Majha and Doaba belts but has since spread throughout the state.

Vinay Kumar Hari, an immigration consultant based in Chandigarh, said, “It is high time the Punjab government arrested people behind this illegal immigration mafia. Ten days have passed since the first flight landed in Amritsar. They should start focusing on how to tackle this illegal migration, as they must have received enough tip-offs from the deportees. As per the figures from the US, 7.25 lakh Indians have applied for asylum in the US in the past 25 years. That means something. Governments need to work on how to stop this illegal migration.”

Hari added, “People who go with study visas spend a minimum of 20 lakh a year for a minimum of four years and later get a job as per their qualification, while many are allured to the ‘donkey route’, in which they spend a one-time amount of Rs 50 lakh or more. Many have settled in the US having chosen this route in the past. We feel surprised that many green card holders proudly say they went through the ‘donkey route’ after facing many hardships. This is the reason many others are allured to follow the illegal route. Through this route, they neither clear the IELTS exam nor need to study in any university. Above all, many singers have made songs promoting the ‘donkey route’, which is really discouraging.”

“Once a person crosses the Mexico border to enter the US, they surrender themselves to the US police and live in a refugee camp for a few months. This is how the lawyer comes into the picture to bail them out after filling an immigration bond, which is an additional expense. This is how they gain work rights in the US and the illegal immigrants file an application seeking asylum. Deportations used to happen in the past from the camps, but many others used to get bail and further work rights. So they find this an ‘easy way’ without fearing deportation,” Hari explained.

Among deportees from US, Punjab’s duo who last called home with ‘good news’ of their arrest

As her cellphone rang on January 28 and Harjeet Singh’s name blinked on the screen, Sukhjeet Kaur picked the call, her heart racing as she awaited for her son to share with her the “good news”. Harjeet, who alongwith his cousin Harjot Singh had left their home at Khanowal village in Punjab’s Gurdaspur on October 12, had finally managed to illegally cross into the US from Mexico that day. That, however, was not the good news.

“Harjeet was happy that he and Harjot will now be arrested by the US authorities. He told us that he may not be able to call us for next few days,” said Sukhjeet Kaur. “They were not worried about their arrest as it was the necessary first step to start the paper work”.

The “paper work” here is the application for seeking asylum in the US. It had been a routine process in the past that illegal immigrants, who would get arrested after entering the US from Mexico on crossing the border, would be kept at detention centres. Later they would be given a chance to seek asylum and their case would be heard. With the process, in some cases, dragging on for years, the immigrants would start taking up petty jobs. If the papers were approved, the immigrants would get the legal status, opening the doors for them to get their family members to the US. Read more

US Deported Illegal Indian Immigrants Live Updates: ‘How many travel agents booked for human trafficking in 3 years?,’ Partap Singh Bajwa slams Punjab CM Mann

Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Saturday slammed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, while alleging a failure on the part of the AAP-led government to curb the human trafficking of Punjabis in the last three years. This comes even as a second US plane with 119 Indian deportees is scheduled to land in Amritsar.

Highlighting the Punjab Prevention of Human Smuggling Act, 2012, which aims to impose checks and curbs on illegal and fraudulent activities of people engaging in organised human smuggling, Bajwa questioned, 'Can CM Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio, let Punjabis know how many travel agents have been booked under the same law in the last three years?' While mentioning Mann's point on illegal immigration being a national problem, Bajwa said, 'True, but is his government not responsible for acting if any illegality happens in the state? He seems to have been running away from his responsibilities. However, it was one of AAP’s main election planks to stop the brain drain by motivating youngsters to explore careers in the home state.'

US Deported Illegal Indian Immigrants Live Updates: Punjabis unfairly targeted - CM Bhagwant Mann's swipe at Centre

As second set of US deportees are scheduled to land in Amritsar today, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann slammed the Centre terming it a conspiracy to malign Punjab and Punjabis.

Taking a swipe at the BJP-led Centre, Mann alleged that despite Punjab’s contributions as India’s “food bowl and sword arm,” the Centre is running a smear campaign against the state. Mann also criticised the Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) decision to land deportation flights in Amritsar while several other airports across India were available.

“I have already raised this issue with the MEA and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), but I haven’t received a satisfactory response. One such flight landed a few days ago, and now two more are being sent here without any justification,” he said.

Mann alleged that Punjabis are being unfairly targeted. “The Prime Minister and his party dislike Punjabis, despite the fact that more than 90% of those martyred, jailed, or exiled during India’s freedom struggle were from Punjab,” he remarked.
