“We knew the outcome of exit polls in advance… The media showed the NDA alliance would make a clean sweep based on concocted facts and vested interests,” Roy Barman said. (Express Archives) BJP leaders in Tripura appeared confident on Sunday after most exit poll predictions gave the saffron party a thumping majority in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. On the other hand, Opposition INDIA bloc partners – CPI(M) and Congress – claimed that the exit polls were rigged and unduly favoured the ruling party.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a blood donation camp in Agartala, CPI(M) politburo member and former chief minister Manik Sarkar said, “While exit poll predictions have been made, the INDIA bloc leaders have announced the number of seats they expect to win… They have also claimed that they will form the government. There is nothing new to comment on this matter. We will have to wait till June 4.”
INDIA bloc’s Tripura co-convener and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Sudip Roy Barman said he was confident that the Opposition alliance would form the government.
“We knew the outcome of exit polls in advance… The media showed the NDA alliance would make a clean sweep based on concocted facts and vested interests,” Roy Barman said.
“Some predictions showed the BJP would win 16-18 seats in Haryana while the state has 10 seats. On the other hand, the Congress, which is contesting nine seats in Tamil Nadu, was projected to win 13-16 seats. The Lok Janshakti Party is contesting five seats in Bihar, but certain exit poll predictions have said they could win up to six seats,” the Congress leader said, adding that the exit poll predictions were a ploy to demoralise the Opposition and give the BJP some undue benefit.
Referring to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s claim that the INDIA bloc would emerge victorious with 295 seats, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhary said, “What Kharge said is not just his personal opinion. That is the minimum number of seats that the INDIA bloc parties expect to win. But we have to wait for the results.”
Refuting the claims of the Opposition, BJP Tripura president Rajib Bhattacharya said, “We had worked with the target of ‘Abki Baar, 400 Paar’ set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. All the poll predictions suggest that our tally will be around 400 seats.”
He said the Opposition failed to set a proper agenda and the BJP would win both the parliamentary seats in the state.
